    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • Absolutely fantastic. Despite the virtual internship, they really did their best to ensure we were on actual and interesting projects and we had proper work to do. Everyone at Morgan Stanley is extremely nice, so were all willing to network and chat over virtual coffees. We also had an intern competition to code a robot, which was really fun and allowed us to connect with the other interns. Overall a really enjoyable experience, despite being home for the seven weeks.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I felt very valued! I was completely trusted with my own project, and reported to one manager. I was given the freedom to design my work how I wanted, and add extra features to my project - my manager was always super supportive of any ideas I came up with that I wanted to try. Everyone treated me like a fellow employee, rather than an 'intern', and I didn't feel any less of an employee than the others.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I was given a lot of support, everyone was there to help - managers, team members, HR, other interns and other employees too, who weren't even a part of the team. It was really helpful having such a diverse range of people to ask, and everyone responded very quickly to any questions or queries I had. I had a daily meeting with my direct manager and a meeting at the start, middle and end with HR, and regular meetings with my assigned 'buddy'.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Very busy - but in a good way. We were given actual projects we had to deliver on, so this meant we had actual work and code to do. We also had an intern project to code a robot so had to spend time working on that. And on top of that we would have meetings, intern talks, speaker events, workshops, skills sessions and networking sessions! Then on top of that we would network on our own and try to get to know each other. It was busy but it was so fun and enjoyable it didn't really feel like work :)

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • We were given a lot of responsibility, and the projects we were working on were real projects we had to deliver. My project was completely my own, and I was the only person working on this part of the code. I had the responsibility to finish it and make sure it met all the necessary requirements - obviously there was a huge network of people around me to support me, but it was up to me to get it done.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • We were given a lot of training, which will definitely help me once I join the firm. I study engineering, so the tech specific skills won't be that helpful in my degree but definitely will be once I start a career in technology. We were also given access to a lot of skill learning platforms that we could utilise, again these skills will really help in the career. We also learnt a lot just by being thrown in the deep end - and that's the best way to learn really!

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • It was all virtual so not quite the office! But overall the atmosphere was great - everyone is really friendly and up for a chat, all the interns are really intelligent and cool and the HR team is incredible! My department was really close and had a weekly virtual quiz that someone ran each time, and we had a lot of fun intern events and stuff to do. They really tried to simulate that warm and welcoming environment from home - and they did!

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Incredibly honestly. Considering the whole thing was virtual, and they turned it virtual in like less than two months, it was so well structured and organised. Everything was really clear from the start, and we got some stuff (like set up and remote access) sorted earlier so we didn't have to faff with that after the start date. It was really easy using Outlook's calendar and HR would keep up updated all the time, so we always knew what to do - this was really important since it was virtual.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • It seemed like everyone in the office really tried to help me make the most out of the internship, and were really willing to give up their time and energies to help me understand the firm and what a career here could look like. My manager made sure I was constantly learning new skills and ways of working, and the regular meetings with HR meant that I was constantly reviewing my own goals and making sure I was hitting them.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Working from home

    Healthcare/Dental

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Very appealing! They have an incredible technology analyst programme, and the career progression looks really good.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Yeah really good! The other interns are all great and I feel like, despite it being virtual, I've made some really good friends! HR organised some networking sessions but also some fun events, like a virtual escape room. Then we also organised some events on top of this, and would regularly connect and call each other for catch ups. We built a good network of friends and it was a great social scene despite not actually meeting anyone in person!

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Worked from home so N/A but Canary Wharf can be a bit expensive and London drinks prices are a tad high, but I think MS can help with the accommodation costs.

    2/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Was virtual so N/A technically, but London nightlife - especially in Canary Wharf - is buzzing!

    5/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Since the internship was virtual, there were no in person events. We were, however, encouraged to join societies and connect with people. And there were a lot of opportunities to attend speaker sessions and talks, and they had well-being Wednesday's where they would do a fun activity from home that you could join in on, like cooking or yoga and stuff. And they organised a lot of fun events for the interns, like a virtual escape room and 'pub quiz'.
