    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I did a year industry placement with Expedia Group and here's what I got to say: The culture is extremely welcoming. People are very friendly and approachable. Everyone is always ready to help. Best company I have worked for. Made a lot of friends for life. Tasks are very interesting as you are always learning and reconsolidating what you have learned (both from uni and work). You get to learn about a lot of different cutting-edge technologies. Best Job ever!

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Like family! I was treated like colleagues and co-workers instead of just interns - someone who will only be there for a limited period of time. There is always opportunity on giving your opinials on projects or things in general since everyone is very approachable and there are meetings there for your team to reflect on things. (Mainly onwork but it can also be anything). Every now and then you are also invited to go out with your team for team lunches. You are never left behind just because you are an intern.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Fantastic. All my managers are extremely supportive. They inspire me and motivates you. They always make sure you are given enough help and support to work on your task and there is always someone that you can turn to if you feel stuck. You can just speak to them easily even if you need support or guidance on non work related things. They are always there ready to help! This is one of the best thing about the company - (in my opionion).

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Perrrrfect Balance! When I started, I was given enough time to learning everything. Then you are given time to apply your learnings into simple projects. A typical day at work would be: You go in the office in the morning, then you work for a bit and have 1 or 2 meetings. At lunch time you will go and hang out with some friends. Our team often go together for team lunches. In the afternoon you carry on with you work and maybe have a little break with your team if good progression is made. You always have work but you can take breaks. Normally there's no rush and there's time for everthing!

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • Just enough! At the start of the placement you are mainly trying to learn as much as to can. Once you get a bit more used to the technologies you will be given your own project. So you can be the main person doing reseraches in that area and later explain/ do a presentation on your project. On top of that, noramlly the project will be somewhat related to what your collegagues or teams are doing at the same time, so you are never on your own when you are stuck.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Definitely skill for life! My manager and co workers always make sure when they explain something to me I actually understand them and not just for completing the project. I have learnt so much! A brief life of technologies covered include: Redshift, Redshift spectrum, AWS S3, HQL, bash, azkaban scheduler, Airflow, Kstream, Docker, Java, Spring Boot, Kumo, Tableau, communication skills, management skills, HDFS, Kafka technology . . . etc

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Endless Opportunities. Our company really make sure there are many opportunities and events employees can go to to meet more people. From time to time there are activity days where you can just go out and have fun (as a work day). Just some examples: One of the event you went to crystal maze! Another is espace room. Another one is the company set up a food market after work for everyone to go to and have fun and meet new peoples! Loads and loads of opportunities! Not to mention parties for halloween and christmas!
