    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • The internship was extremely well structured and thought out. Despite being a virtual internship there was much opportunity for teamwork and collaboration, and we were given a lot of independence in the projects we were tasked with as well as support from around the company. With Q&As with the leadership team, as well as training workshops and presentations from various departments there was also a wide variety of virtual networking and insight into Tesco as a company.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Steve and Dani who ran the internship were extremely welcoming and went the extra mile to make us all feel comfortable within the programme. Our project leads were also extremely helpful and supportive with our intern team. There was a great feeling of encouragement and support from the Tesco colleagues that really made us all feel very valued. Whatsmore we received lots of feedback from our colleagues which really made me feel like my work was being valued.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Our supervisors were very supportive, encouraging us to come to them with any queries we had, and providing us with guidance. There were specific weekly sessions held to either simply have a catch up or ask any questions. Any feedback we had was also taken into consideration greatly.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • The internship virtual sessions meant that generally throughout the day there would be a couple of compulsory meetings, and then the rest of the day would be allocated to project work. As a result there was a good varity of work that kept us busy!

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • In general, as it was a virtual internship the responsibility we were given was to come up with a concept corresponding the brief given to us by our project lead. We were allowed to work independently as interns when completing this.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Generally the training courses provided with many transferable skills, including how to present and how to collaborate with a team. Working virtually with a team is something I would definitely say we learnt thoroughly, a skill which will undoubtedly be useful in the future. Creating a presentation and carrying out research, reaching out to others in Tesco for advice all provided invaluable experience for the future.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The atmosphere of the virtual internship was fun and welcoming. It was not intimidating to speak up despite being on large calls. Ice breakers featured regularly and socialising via teams was encouraged. On the whole it was a really great and enjoyable atmsopshere which made me excited for each day.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • We had coffee roulette sessions to encourage us to chat to other interns, as well as other intern led socials which made the social scene (despite it being a virtual) really enjoyable. It was really such a lovely group of people with whom it was a pleasure to sit and chat to over a coffee or drink, albeit virtually!
