    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I really enjoyed my Internship within the ESG & Regulatory team - I was given the opportunity to carry out real and valued work within the team as well as insight into all the different areas of the business. The structure of the internship is great for meeting people and gaining exposure to different business areas.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I felt very valued by my colleagues - I was trusted with real work and encouraged to voice my opinions and to ask questions even when in meetings with clients or with more senior members of the business.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My line manager was very patient and took more time than I would have expected to answer any of my questions about both the work as well as more generally about careers or other business areas. My manager was also great at facilitating introductions to other employees/business areas.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • For the first few weeks I was about as busy as I made myself. I had a good amount of work and training to complete but the interns are given the freedom to schedule their own introductions and meetings with employees to learn about different areas of the business. For the final two weeks, I was very busy as project deadlines drew in but I could lessen the load by scheduling fewer calls.

    5/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given a large amount of responsibility considering my position. I was given a research project that would have real use in the future. At the end of the internship I was given the opportunity to present my research to a group of more senior members of the business. I was also encouraged to voice my opinions or ask any questions in client calls.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I widened my understanding of various financial tools like ISS and excel which I think will definitely be of use in any future financial career. I also learnt valuable business skills like how to act in a professional environment, teamwork and how to research a topic through a critical/analytical lens.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • It was hard to gain an understanding of the physical atmosphere of the office as the internship was virtual. However, I think it was still possible to gain an understanding of the general working culture which is very positive. Everyone is very inclusive and collaborative and were willing to facilitate my learning in any way that they could.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The internship was well organised - some of the communication was delayed slightly but I think this was more because of the virtual environment (due to COVID-19) which warranted a huge change in a short amount of time. I was also very impressed that the internship was still carried out.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • The company invested a great deal in the interns, and you can tell that the company values it's graduates very highly. I was very impressed that the internship went ahead and was impressed by the amount of resources that were dedicated to us. Many senior members of the firm took time to give us introductory talks or answer any questions we may have had.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Flexi Time

    Working from home

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I think that employee prospects are very good with M&G, I think I built a strong relationship with the team and managed to produce some work of real value. I also had the opportunity to connect with employees across the business and gain insight into their business areas.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Once again, because the internship was virtual it was hard to immerse yourself in the social scene. However, you can tell there is a very strong bond between the grads and between team members. You constantly hear about various social groups and events that are running or would have been running had the office been open. I got the impression that there was a strong social scene at M&G.

    5/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • I was living at home as the internship was virtual.

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • I was living at home as the internship was virtual. However, Bristol had a great night life pre-COVID!

    3/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Once again, as the internship was virtual opportunities for this were rare. However, there were still virtual talks and social groups. Furthermore, throughout my time I heard a lot about different societies or social events that would have been hosting activities had we been in the office.
