    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I had a great time during my virtual internship with Amex this summer (2020). Everyone was extremely welcoming and the company culture really shone through. My manager and team were incredibly helpful and provided me with valuable support and feedback throughout my 6 weeks. The curriculum provided by the campus team enriched my development so I concluded my internship having grown both as a business strategist but also as an individual. I would recommend this internship to any one who wants to learn more about financial services and the corporate world.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I was made to feel welcome and valued at every step of the process; from interviews, to start date and into the last week of the program. The fact that they pivoted and made the internship virtual spoke volumes to how they value the input of interns. Regular correspondence and care packages from the campus team drove this home.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Everyone who I interacted with over the course of the 6 weeks made me feel valued and was keen to help with my development. I had the chance to meet (virtually) with colleagues from all over the business and across levels of seniority. I was able to discuss my project with them and get feedback on my recommendations and presentation. My team were always on hand to offer advice on both my project but also on career development.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • My days started at 9am and I worked through to 5/5:30 in the evening. I worked on my project the bulk of the time but also found time to network with colleagues across the business. The campus team organised lunchtime/afternoon development sessions as well as talks from all the business groups. On top of these sessions I was a regular attendee at a US speaker series with the executive committee of Amex. I had the chance to ask the CEO about how Covid-19 will affect the enterprises business model in the future. So I would work on my project in the morning and attend calls in the afternoon.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was the main driving force behind my project and I had the freedom to pursue areas that I found particularly interesting. My manager was always around to help guide my work and was an excellent thought partner. They were also very helpful in redirecting me if my work was going down a tangent. I think this was the perfect balance as I had lots of room to grow whilst not being completely on my own.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • My time with Amex has given me the chance to develop many skills that are important to my studies but also moving forward into my career. I had plenty of practice in giving presentations and discussing my recommendations in an articulate and concise matter. As this was my first ever internship the list of things I have learnt over the 6 weeks would be very long so I wont list them all here.
