    About You

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy the virtual experience?
  • There were lots of aspects that were enjoyable. The sustainability challenge was interesting and engaging. It allowed us to interact with each other, without the pressure of having to do it in front of a group of 30 odd strangers. The Q&A with [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyPlacement Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions] was also good and brought about some very interesting discussion. However, day 1 was a bit dry since it focussed more about what the company do and the general functions of each company department which I found didn't provide too much insight that couldn't be found from by researching the company.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued during your time at the company or firm?
  • Everyone running the event was enthusiastic and tried their best to engage us. There were plenty of opportunities to ask questions and shape discussions that way. It was good to get key members of senior staff for a Q&A and made us feel valued since they had taken time out of their own day to speak to us directly. Also the UFLP team were very good at answering questions about future employment opportunities and informing us of what would be happening on our SP next year.

  • 3. How much guidance/support did you receive during the virtual experience?
  • The discussions during the purpose workshop were directed well to try and get you to think about our answers to the questions. The environments for all conversations were friendly and open which was useful however this was better in activities where we were divided into smaller groups as it was less intimidating speaking to a few people at a time. The environment of the experience was friendly and questions were welcome, particularly to help with technical issues.

  • 4. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and information you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • The Q&A with [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyPlacement Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions] allowed some questions to be asked about how to make decisions on Final Year Projects at university and these were answered very well, which was useful. The employment activities were useful but a bit general. The other activities were interactive and focused on teamwork and marketing ideas. However, there was no activities specific to the role I had applied for, which was disappointing. It would have been good if there were some activities related directly to what department we were interested in.

    The Company

  • 5. How well structured was the virtual experience?
  • It was well structured and stuck to the time schedule that it was supposed to. I do think it would have been better to structure more icebreakers or small group activities on day 1 to introduce everyone and make the environment more open. I think this would have improved the activities that included everyone at the same time since people would have been more confident to speak out after having an initial activity to do.

  • 6. How was the general atmosphere during your virtual experience?
  • It was nice and friendly, especially the UFLP team that were running most of the session. It wasn't awkward but it was a strange atmosphere when everyone was sitting in the call with video and microphones on mute. It would have been better to have smaller groups to improve this atmosphere but for some of the activities it was not possible. Although given the circumstances, it was ran well and I cannot fault those running it.

  • 7. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • There were not many personal training opportunities, which is something I thought was disappointing. I applied for the summer placement to try and get more work experience and this alternative opportunity did not replace that requirement. It would have been more advantageous if the experience was more tailored to what field we were most interested in and perhaps had more workshops that allowed better development. The sustainability challenge was good for this but could have been extended or coached to improve the ideas that had come out of it.

  • 8. To what extent did the virtual experience help you to understand what it would be like to have a full time role with the company or firm?
  • The only aspect of the experience that gave a real insight into what working for Unilever would be like was the sustainability challenge, which was good and exercised working in a team, sharing ideas and problem solving. However, over the two days this was the only opportunity for this to happen. I also thought the representatives of each department gave a good overview of what each department does and a few examples of projects that the company have worked on but this was quite broad and didn't provide enough insight.

  • 9. How much did the virtual experience help you in understanding the company culture?
  • This experience was excellent at promoting the culture of Unilever. The "purpose" workshop illustrated how Unilever focuses on their employees goal's and the workshop helped to explain why Unilever believe this is important. I left the two days with a better understanding of the culture and how all employees buy into it. This was perhaps explained a bit over the top when more time could be spent on the roles of different departments in the company.

  • 10. How valuable was the content in helping you to decide on your future career path?
  • The experience gave me great insight into what it would be like to work in Unilever in terms of working in a nice environment and being well look after as well as understanding how the structure of the company works with regards to the UFLP and the placement opportunities that they offer. However, there was little focus on the exact responsibilities of employees, especially SP students, which I wanted to know more about to inform my future career.

  • 11. Were you paid or reimbursed adequately for this experience?
  • I understand that being paid for this experience would not be sensible since no expenses were really required to get involved in this experience. It was also made perfectly clear that we wouldn't be paid for it. The key focus of the experience was to gain insight about the company before we go to work for the company therefore there was no requirement to get paid for this. The experience was good enough that not getting paid was not an issue.

  • 12. Were there opportunities for networking and meeting other employees of the company or firm?
  • This is definitely an aspect of the experience I think could be improved. The members of the UFLP introduced themselves nicely and explained their roles in the company well. We were also given opportunities to meet senior members of staff within Unilever and ask questions which was very insightful. Employees were also friendly and mentioned they were happy for us to follow them on linkedin which allowed a lasting connection to be gained from the experience.

  • 13. How were the networking/ social event opportunities?
  • This is definitely an aspect of the experience I think could be improved. Although the members of the UFLP introduced themselves nicely and explain their roles in the company well, none of the participants really had an opportunity to introduce themselves to each other and network, which I thought would be really nice. I think it would have been good if some sort of activity could have been integrated to the day which allowed that to happen earlier in day 1.

    3/5

  • 14. Did you find out about activities that employees can get involved in outside of work?
  • The current members of the UFLP explained the various activities that they had been involved in during their employment with Unilever whether that be volunteering, charity work, sports events or other significant events. It was also explained how staff members were given additional holiday days that could be used to get involved in events outside of work. It was made clear how members of staff were supported to ensure their workloads were managed to allow this to happen.

    5/5

  • 15. Would you recommend this virtual experience to a friend?
  • I would recommend to a friend although I did have criticism of parts of the experience. The networking aspects of it alone were useful as I was introduced to a few people who I may be working with in the future. In addition to this, the Q&A with Richard Sharp was insightful and the sustainability challenge was fun and made me think about new ideas. The experience also gave good insight to the company in general.
