    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • The internship was very insightful and provided me with a lot of knowledge about investment banking. The first week was a training week planned by HR, and in the second week, I received more training by the team that I chose to join. This was very helpful as I did not have any previous experience. Aside from this big help, everyone who I spoke to and got to work with at the firm was very nice and made me feel very welcome, which is what really matters when choosing what firm you want to work at.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Working with a lot of different people from my team, whether they were analysts, associates or VP's - every single person that I helped made sure to thank me for my hard work which is very motivating when you are working tough hours. If the internship had been in person, I am sure that this would have made the experience a lot better too, seeing that I would have been able to form stronger relationships with my teammates.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My manager was very supportive and helpful. He made sure to call me to catch up and see how I was doing most weeks, as well as calling me after my test and presentation which I was understandably nervous about. This was very much appreciated, as I got to express how I felt I was doing and I was able to give any feedback that I thought they could take on board. In general, my manager was very supportive and always made me feel positive.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I was quite busy on a daily basis - some days were busier than others, but in general I would work from around 9am to 9pm at least. Some days were filled with delegated tasks from teammates and others were filled with some delegated tasks and me working on my final presentation. I think that it is worth mentioning that, if I felt that I had too much on my plate, I was able to contact my manager and say so.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given a fair amount of responsibility considering the circumstances - we were not allowed to be given any inside information. This of course made it difficult for interns to be given a lot of responsibilities, however, I still believe that the tasks given had a lot of responsibility. For instance, one task that I was given included researching potential M&A targets for a company - I made a list of the ones that I believed could be considered, and a few of the companies that I suggested ended up being presented to the client!

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • The skills that I have learned and enhanced during my internship will be useful for me in life. The training received was very useful as I did not have any prior experience in investment banking, so this will be very helpful as I pursue a career in investment banking after I finish my university degree. In general, everything that I learned in the internship is useful in one way or another, whether it is time-management which I will be able to apply to almost anything in life, or whether it is how to do a DCF from scratch which will prove useful in a future IB role.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Seeing that we were in the middle of a pandemic, the internship was made to be online. Hence, we were not present in the office for the duration of the internship. However, the general atmosphere with all the Citi employees was very positive. We had weekly calls with HR who and team meetings two times per week which made us feel closer to the team despite not being able to be in the office and working alongside them.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The internship was very well organised considering the short amount of time that Citi had to change the internship from being in the office to a virtual internship. During the first week we received a general training on accounting and modelling, with a lot of calls to help us improve general skills such as presentation skills. The second week, I received training from the team that I chose to join, going through all different types of modelling that we would be seeing throughout the internship. After the second week we started to work with our teams. In the penultimate week I had a modelling test, which was very useful. In the last week, I had my presentation (which I had been preparing throughout the presentation).

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I believe that Citi invested a lot in all the intern training. In week one we had training from another company which specialised in finance training, where we learned general things about accounting and how to build a DCF model (very useful for the rest of the internship). We also received one training session on every Monday which related to investment banking - during these sessions we learned how to do a company profile, all the different valuation methods and more.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Very appealing. Citi exceeded my expectations of how an investment banking internship would be, specially considering that it was from home, which made it not as "authentic" as one would think. The thought of being able to work at Citi once I graduate from university is very appealing. Citi is a very positive firm to work at and all the employees are very nice and welcoming which is very important when choosing where one wants to work.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • All the interns were very kind and friendly - We have a group chat with all the interns that Citi hired, one with the interns within the investment banking division and one with the interns who were in the same team as me. In general, I don't feel like anyone was competitive, but everyone was very positive and supported each other. The interns in my team and I would have video calls every other week to catch up and make sure that everyone was enjoying the internship.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Working from home - no extra cost of renting a flat in London.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Working from home, so not applicable in the current circumstances, but I do know that the nightlife in London is very good and enjoyable although quite expensive.

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • We were able to join different networks in the company, however, being in the middle of a pandemic means that no in person activities planned. We did have team socials on Zoom, as well as an intern quiz, which was a nice way for all the interns to get to know each other and interact with each other.
