    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • The internship was very enjoyable. You get emerged in the experience from day one and there is constant support from your team and managers. There's also a global platform and directory you can leverage through a virtual experience. There are various senior leaders that you have to check in with, and there is a formal hierarchy, but everyone is approachable. I would say due to the shortened duration of 5 weeks it was much more challenging.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • My colleagues were constantly engaging and valued my suggestions. It was up to me to build a network I valued and that would help me throughout the duration of my experience. Everyone was very open to talking and giving me an insight. I really appreciated the global culture of the firm and everyone was available for a conversation. I was surrounded by very intelligent people that loved to share their experiences at the firm. Overall, my colleagues would always make time for my questions.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I had constant meetings with my managers and supervisors. They were highly involved in my day to day activities and were always concerned about how I was getting on with my day. They really helped in building the right connections and getting involved in beyond the day to day activities. They were largely supportive throughout the process and I had to constantly manage their expectations as they were judging my performance across the work I delivered.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • There was no formal time frame to work, it was largely up to me to make my own calendar. There were mandatory sessions that you had to attend but largely it was up to my own initiative and drive to create my experience. You were expected to be present for at least a 9 hour day but usually it would be over considering the shorter time frame of my internship. There was always something to do and get involved in, and no day was the same.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • Overall, I was given 3 projects to work on and they were data driven. So I had to make the appropriate inferences and connect with the right people to understand it and present them. They were largely helpful to my team and their development. It was work which they could reflect on and present to senior leaders at the firm to make their case. Beyond my projects I was also involved in training plans and day to day activities.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • The work I did and the skills I developed largely helped me understand and apply my education in a practical setting. It gave me an insight on how theories reflect in a real life setting. It definitely felt as though my studies guided my decision making but when there are real resources on the line I gained a different perspective to apply what I had learnt. Overall, it was very rewarding to gain an experience in a corporate environment where the stakeholders place you in unique settings.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Unfortunately as the experience was fully virtual I couldn't gain an insight into the office, although virtually it still felt as though I was being challenged and constantly learning new things. Everyday was vastly different than the prior days, there was always something to get involved in, someone to talk to, and something to do. It was still the fast paced environment you would expect in the office. On the other hand, I did wish it was a hybrid experience so we gained some insight into doing the work in a physical setting.

    5/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • There were formal training sessions to attend and there were training sessions developed by my team members and managers. Although, beyond that, it was largely up to me to mold my own experience and connect with as many people as possible. I also had the ability to discover the areas I was personally interested and get various questions answered. It was a bit odd working in a corporate environment from home, although you constantly had to be professional like in the office.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • The firm had various resources to learn more in any area of interest. As an intern you just had to express interest and source the right avenues of pursuing what you want to. Furthermore, professionals set up formal training sessions for your general division and your team set up formal training sessions for your specific business unit. If you ever wanted to learn more or had more questions you could always reach out to the GS professionals.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • GS is an extremely lean company and a career at the firm always brings challenges. It is very competitive and they always try and ensure they have the best talent. There is a lot of opportunity to develop from within and the GS initiatives are always growing and changing as markets evolve. Various divisions are growing at an accelerated rate and there are many options for internal mobility throughout the firm. All you have to do is raise your hand to get involved.
