    About You

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy the virtual experience?
  • Everyone was super supportive even in the virtual environment. The HCM team has put in a lot of efforts to make sure we got as much interaction with others as possible. They also make it possible for the senior people to have conversations with us, which is really useful.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued during your time at the company or firm?
  • My manager always encouraged me and told me the value of the internship. The other people are also interested in what you have done and take the time to appreciate your effort. The sessions with senior management also make me feel valued as they were emphasizing how valuable we are. I genuinely think they value the summer interns. They also made it possible for us to reach out to them and take our concerns seriously.

  • 3. How much guidance/support did you receive during the virtual experience?
  • I received a lot of support during this experience. Because of the virtual situation, it is hard to set up the technology remotely. My manager has taken some time to help me do that step by step, which was really nice of him. Every time I have a question related to the project, my teammates are also super helpful and gave me great advice. Other than that, I have talked to some people and they gave me valuable career advice or general life lesson. These really helped me a lot in terms of personal development as well.

  • 4. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and information you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • The skills I learnt are quite transferable to many other situations and I definitely feel that I am more confident and capable in coding. I also learnt a lot in teamwork and grew professionally.

    The Company

  • 5. How well structured was the virtual experience?
  • The internship is quite structured and the project was well designed. I finished it in time and that really makes me feel proud and accomplished.

  • 6. How was the general atmosphere during your virtual experience?
  • It was really friendly. Although the work is fast paced, everyone enjoys the steep learning experience and encourages us to be a sponge and make the most out of it. I like it where everyone is motivated and intellectually curious to improve themselves.

  • 7. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I think the company invested significantly in us. It provides such a great opportunity for us to experience the culture and to develop as a person. There were sessions on personal development, such as how to include yourself and how to present, for example. These sessions really taught me skills which are transferable and valuable. The people also gave great career advice when they share their career path and tell us what they would have done when they look back.

  • 8. To what extent did the virtual experience help you to understand what it would be like to have a full time role with the company or firm?
  • I think by observing what the others do and talking to the full-times helped me to understand what it is like to be a full time employee. However, it is still quite different from an intern and I sometimes feel what I do it separated from the rest of the team.

  • 9. How much did the virtual experience help you in understanding the company culture?
  • I think the virtual internship highlights the fact that people are willing to talk to you and take out maybe 30 min to talk to you. Although it might be more natural in office, people are super willing to accept your invitation and very open to talk to you about anything. Everyone also encourages people to learn and develop, which is really motivating for me. It would definitely be better if I get to work in the office. However I think I do like the culture that is shown through this internship.

  • 10. How valuable was the content in helping you to decide on your future career path?
  • The content was very helpful. I did have a feel of what it is like working in GS and in this industry. I also have to think thoroughly about my career path. As I did enjoy this experience, I will say the content did help me understand myself a bit more and decide my future.

    Everything Else

  • 11. Were you paid or reimbursed adequately for this experience?
  • It is very generous of GS to still cover the 10 weeks of salary although the duration is changed to 5.

  • 12. Were there opportunities for networking and meeting other employees of the company or firm?
  • Yes there were some opportunities to network with the other people in the firm. It still boils down to whether you take the initiative to arrange chats with others. I have done some and I find them really helpful. My manager gave me some recommendations on who to talk to, which is very helpful. There were also sessions organised by the NIC team to put us in groups and help us interact. Senior leaders were also accessible during the conversations.

  • 13. How were the networking/ social event opportunities?
  • Individual chats were great and I got to learn a lot from the others. However some social game sessions were less interesting and we did not have many people attending as well. It feels very awkward and we did not get to have more social interaction. The networking events are generally alright and we can get to know the important information and ask what we want to know. That was easy and highly encouraged by them.

  • 14. Did you find out about activities that employees can get involved in outside of work?
  • I did. Many of the groups have presented to us, introducing the initiatives and groups that are there within GS. I like listening to what they are doing and they seem to be groups of really passionate people and doing amazing things. I feel inspired after hearing what they said. On a more casual side, I found out the social events they have in the team and what they do outside of work, which also helped me know the team better.

  • 15. Would you recommend this virtual experience to a friend?
  • Yeah I would
