The Role
Overall, my internship was an amazing experience. I participated in a vast range of projects across my division which gave me deep insight into the division and an understanding of the typical activities the teams would engage in. From day 1, I was exposed to real-life work and was seen more than an intern but as a full-time employee. There was a perfect mix of challenges and learning, and I was always encouraged to voice my opinions and add my perspective in meetings.
A majority of people would show genuine gratitude for any contribution or value that I may have added to the team or within a project, this would motivate me and always kept me upbeat. You tend to receive a lot of thankful messages and emails from team members and others within the division whenever they identify your hard work through deliverables and other outputs.
I was given a lot of guidance from my manager, we would regularly have catch-ups during the week and she would never shy at giving me useful feedback to better myself and be more effective in my role. This would help me identify my areas for weakness and ensure this is something I work on in the following weeks to demonstrate my growth and development.
The days tend to differ, but for most days you will find yourself busy, attending a lot of meetings and often working a bit later than usual. With my internship being virtual, I found myself having a lot more meetings and catch-ups in the day, compared to a conversation you may have with someone over a cup of coffee. Your projects will take up a lot of your time, if you don't balance your time right, you will find yourself playing catch up to meeting deadlines, consequently overworking yourself.
I was granted a great deal of responsibility, from day 1 you find yourself having to work on 'real' ongoing projects and are expected to often drive these projects yourself as this will be used to assess your value-added throughout the internship.
By choice, I did not complete the internship within a division that is closely aligned to my degree, yet I still experienced tremendous growth in my core skill set. Most of the employees don't shy away from giving you feedback or guidance and it really makes you think and work harder to correct these weaknesses. By the end of the internship, I saw growth in my communication, attention to detail and analytical skills.
The Company
With the internship being virtual I couldn't get a real sense for the atmosphere within the office. However, all my interactions with the analysts and associates within my division, came across supportive and positive, one I believe reflects the true office vibe.
Being the first cohort of interns to participate in a Summer Internship virtually, it was all fantastically set up. I found myself always busy, always engaged and learning constantly. I particularly enjoyed having sessions with the Managing Directors of my division, it was amazing to hear about their journeys and even be able to gain professional advice and guidance from them.
A lot of education and training resources are provided pre, during and even post the internship. There are also several sessions from knowledgeable individuals both internally and externally sharing their expertise and giving us a greater insight into specific fields.
Working from home
Very, a majority of the analyst class are always eager and willing to come back to a permanent basis as full time analysts.
The Culture
With the internship being virtual, not applicable but there was a lot of meetings set up with the other interns and we worked on a number of projects together which was fun.
I worked from home, in my parents house in Essex.
The office I was supposed to work at is based in London, south-east to be specific. In general, London is well known for having good clubs, pubs, restaurants and other places to have a good night.
I was able to engage in a Community TeamWorks project which involved using mapping satellite software to map buildings in a small Indian district Sidhi to help girls derived of education to find suitable locations for schooling.
