    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • Thoroughly enjoyed every aspect. With the quick turnaround from in-person to a virtual internship, the recruitment team and internship staff created an incredible programme and spared no time in making the best of it for us. I've heard it several times when it comes to Deutsche Bank: "People, People, People" and it couldn't be more accurate. From graduate up, it seems that everyone is willing and excited to spare some time to help you learn more and are genuinely passionate in the work they do.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Upon accepting my offer, a director reached out to me and has stayed in contact with me ever since then. From introducing me to colleagues in the division, and to their equivalents globally - it has been an invaluable relationship which I will treasure for a long time. The HR contact was fantastic in keeping us up-to-date with the changes ongoing due to COVID-19 and offering their own time to have a chat with us to answer and quell our concerns. Although two highlights, my manager and buddy equally were fantastic, and so were the rest of the colleagues I have met and stayed in contact with since.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • As previously mentioned, the support was outstanding and exceeded all of my expectations. Not only did all colleagues over their time to network (and offer more time subsequently), my mentor was a member of their Mental Health programme. All of this thought into matching interns with buddies and managers showed through the way I clicked with both. Everyone in the Corporate Bank was friendly, wanting to help, and excited to hear our passions and direct us further.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • With it being the first every virtual internship, I had my doubts and worries about there not being enough workload. However, with a mixture of cross-divisional training, divisional training, networking and project planning - I was kept busy, to say the least. Although I struggled slightly, the support was there to hear these concerns and they were addressed promptly. The range of activities also kept myself learning which I truly enjoyed. There was just enough time during the day to work on the projects alongside other duties.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • Although not the typical desk rotations due to the virtual aspect, I was surprised to find responsibility given in a different way. Two aspects of the assessment were two different projects. The first was a team project where we had to split responsibility, upon where we could see which roles suited one another. The final was an individual research project which demanded you to be responsible for all aspects; networking to gain research, formatting and practice of delivery.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • The training was varied and therefore remained interesting rather than becoming tedious. Officially, it was split between divisional and cross-divisional training. Both were a good experience due to the chance to network with interns outside of our division (and globally) and with our small intern class. Except for that, networking skills and presentation skills have shocked me in the way they've developed (especially with the programme being shortened to 4 weeks). Plus, despite if I receive a graduate offer to return or not - an individual has offered to help me with my training over the remainder of the year - which demonstrates the incredible giving nature of the people here.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Virtually, I was worried with how the atmosphere would be since we were working from home. Personally, there were some issues - which my team remained a great source of help and support. The regular check-ins and constant HR representatives helped to create an atmosphere of fun, positivity and wanting for us to have the best possible experience. This was maintained throughout. The chance to network with such a variety of individuals (inside and outside the division, and globally) created a virtual atmosphere of belonging and diversity.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Fantastic. Considering how little time the team had to convert the programme to entirely virtual, I'm still shocked with the work ethic and drive to deliver. Mostly, the internship went without any issues (despite the odd technical issue). And when it did, we had a debrief with our HR contact. The ability to have input on the internship structure and content also meant that we were able to tailor what we each desired, and therefore made it all the more valuable.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Both officially and unofficially the personal training and development has and will be something that will stay by me for the foreseeable future. Throughout my previous reviews, I have honoured the incredible work put in by the people of DB's Corporate Bank due to their honest and obvious want for us to thrive in this internship. The investing both inside and outside of the programme itself demonstrates the belief that they have in each one of us.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • This internship has highlighted to me how extraordinary the people and job opportunities that Deutsche Bank (and specifically the Corporate Bank) offers. Specifically, the importance placed upon internal mobility, international travel, mentorship and global opportunities has all been things that drew me to the internship initially. However, the people and the job is my dream. To join at such a pivotal moment for Deutsche Bank (and the financial industry as a whole), it would be exciting to see how the sustainable future of finance and emerging markets piece evolves.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Both inside and outside of my divisional intern class. Our intern class set up a group chat as people accepted places. This meant that we were able to become acquainted quickly and were friends during the internship. This made the experience all the more fun and offered an insight into how working in a team is. Through random networking outside of our division, I met a plethora of different and unique individuals that I was able to discuss hobbies and passions with. I also joined a cooking class that interns set up during the weekend, which was a lot of fun to say the least.
