    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • Given the virtual internship environment, the internship has been nothing short of amazing. HR and the business areas have worked super hard to create a valuable learning experience with plenty of zoom sessions, and training sessions to allow us to get to know the firm, the business, and also the whole intern class despite the virtual environment. Within the available parameters, the experience was delivered as best as it could, and I'm grateful to everyone who worked so hard to make it.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • With the virtual environment, there is obviously a limit to what an intern can work on depending on compliance. It has been tricky to engage properly on a desk when your not fully exposed to what is going on, but regardless my team has worked super hard to include me where I can, and when not, I have been provided with things to do that can benefit my experience. So overall, a great experience nonetheless.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Outstanding support and guidance was provided Communication was solid from day 1, with expectations, and guidance set as early as possible so that I knew what to do, where to go, and who to ask when not sure about anything. If there were issues, supervisors would be on hand to take messages, or calls in order to provide guidance. At no point did I feel lost or stranded, support mechanisms were in place at all times.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Again due to the virtual environment, we were limited in terms of the information we were allowed to work with. Inevitable, this meant that we would be less busy in terms of actual physical work. However, in terms of having a busy schedule, HR and the team have made the days flow y with a multitude of zoom training sessions to ensure we have a full breadth of understanding across the whole business. If we had lots of time on out hands, resources were available to allow us to keep learning.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • Again, because of the virtual environment, we were not given the same level of responsibility as would be expected on an in person internship purely because of the limited information we're allowed to deal with. However, for what we were given, there was always a set expectation and deadline for any work, which urged a sense of responsibility in owning what work were were given and doing everything to a high standard, and ensuring you deliver fr your team.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I study a STEM degree which meant i developed problem solving skills, logical thought processes and a strong mathematical toolkit. All these skills are applicable to this internship in a certain way. In day to day tasks, using logical thought processes is key to approach tasks in the best way possible and thinking about problems in a different way. It was good to see that the skills I learnt in my degree are applicable to a wider range of scenarios.

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • This was a virtual internship, so we weren't in an office but in terms of work atmosphere it has been great. HR and the business have worked super hard to put on events for us interns to get to know each other better to compensate for the lack of social interaction possible from working remotely in a virtual environment. So yes, it was not a typical office environment being at home, but nonetheless, it was a good experience.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Although the event in the first week could have been communicated a little better, i.e. a bit more notice on the first week timetable, everything was set up well. It was good that all out IT access was sorted very early on to ensure the on boarding was smooth. Although there were some teething IT issues in the first few weeks, tech support made everything ok in the end. And by week 2, there were almost no issues.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I feel like the firm invested a lot of time and effort into me as an intern. For training there was a comprehensive training week to make sure we were up to speed when we joined the desks, and once we were there, the firm invested heavily in terms of time. People were always available for questions, or chats, not once did I feel lost, or feel like I had no one to approach for help, at all points, I felt strongly that people were there to help out

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Working from home

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Very appealing. This firm, unlike others in the industry, from the onset of Covid-19 made it very clear to the interns that the global pandemic would not affect the normal hiring process, which is hugely reassuring for someone is is juts graduating university, into one of the most difficult job markets for the last 50 years. I'm stunned at this firms unwavering commitment to future talent, which makes me grateful to be a part of this firm.

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • London is an expensive place. Of course going out and having fun in this city is expensive, but it is what it is. The cost doesn't stop me from enjoying yourself after work. Even in a virtual environment, being able to see your friends, or work colleagues outside of work is a blessing, and lets you relax after work. It's also great just to stay in contact with people given how Covid-19 has driven us insane

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • In London the nightlife is generally decent, quite expensive, especially in central so it is tricky. But, given Covid, everything is closed so nightlife really isn't an issue anymore. Pubs are now open again which is great for a social, but again its quite expensive in the area. In normal times, it can be a drain on the wallet, but covid means that nightlife again isn't really much of a factor anymore, but in normal times London is great.
