    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • My Placement has been extremely enjoyable, I was given the opportunity to work on a variety of projects, adjust my scope around my interests and have the chance to get involved in tasks outside of my normal day to day responsibilities. As well as this, due to the massive pool of interns at intel, the social aspect has also been very enjoyable with many social and charity events being supported throughout the year that enabled an escape from work work work

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I felt extremely valued from the moment I started all the way up until the moment I left, they were all extremely understanding and patient in helping me gain a good overview of the business structure and processes that are carried out. As well as this I was always encouraged to voice my opinion and challenge the status quo as they understand that students fresh out of uni have a different perspective to someone who has been in the company for many years and as such, hence I discovered early that a little change recommended by myself can make a big difference.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My manager was always on hand to help during my whole internship and would drop things immediately if I had something important arise. We had weekly one on ones which enabled us to sync on what I was doing, the effects it has and what else I can do, constantly re evaluating my weeks to ensure I could improve on whatever our focus was drawn to. E.g. When doing presentations we often practiced and adjusted the content to ensure I told an effective story

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Very busy, despite being an intern, it is a full-time job with people relying on you so you do have deadlines and international meetings which sometimes call for an early start or staying late some days but alternatively this flexible working style allows us to take time back and start late/finish early when we're not in such a busy period. This aligns with the workload given, the standard responsibilities of the role allow capacity for additional workload to be collected so a lot of the things I was busy on was because I requested to be involved with it and as such enjoyed giving up the additional time for the opportunity

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • A lot of responsibility, I was a second level approver for various marketing activities which meant that I was the last level approver for claims in the hundred thousands of dollars, meaning I personally approved millions of dollars worth of spending throughout the year. As well as this, I was given the chance to manage whole projects for a spell of time which meant working to deadlines and making sure everyone else in the team understands what is required within the agreed deadlines => A lot of responsibility

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Despite not yet going back to uni yet, I already know that over the course of this year my development has been massive and will massively help me when I return to my studies and beyond. This consists of a range of improvements that were enabled by this insight into the work environment, these include things like mindset, confidence and communication skills as well as the obvious skills & training to carry out my role itself.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • There was a definite feel good factor in the office, although everyone is working, there are opportunities to have breaks, go to the canteen or the massage room and take a well deserved break. The seating plan allows you to easily communicate with people who you may work closely with and there is plenty of space to simply go shadow someone for a period of time. As it is a big office, it is easy to interact with people from other teams and find people who can support you and lend their expertise.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • It was very organised at the start and this continued to increase throughout the internship as I gained a better understanding of my role, what was expected and manage my own calendar. The set up is ideal as we were given an overview of our role and responsibilities right at the start and then we have a 5 week 'handover' period with a weekly break down were we get trained up by our previous intern on our complete role.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • There were vast opportunities for training and development that included the opportunity for on-site, off-site and online activities. We were clearly told of funding available for these opportunities and encouraged to apply for whatever courses we desired given they support the team objectives and can be taught among team members. As well as this there is no limit on what you get involved with so I often took training from other departments to gain a range of transferable skills

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Extremely appealing, especially considering the global scale of the company, there are many opportunities to work in offices besides the one I was located in, likewise once I gained a feel for the intel culture, I understood it is very understanding which is obviously a plus as you aren't constantly being babysat or chased up on where you are, there is a big feeling of trust throughout the organisation which is always nice to experience

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Definitely, as there were 40-50 interns, we had socials every thursdays and some weekends, the sports and social club ensured there was always something for everyone which allowed it to be a nice transition between univeristy and the work environment, a very healthy balance

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Very cheap, Swindon is extremely affordable to live and thursday night socials are also very discounted, just like uni. As well as this, Swindon isn't too far from Bristol, Bath and London which enables the opportunities for day trips, nights outs etc.

    4/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • The nightlife is decent with some bars and clubs in old town but personally I believe this very much comes down to who you are with, some socials there will only be intel employees in the whole nighclub

    3/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Of course, many committees at intel that include sports and social, charity, intel involved, publishing etc. These enabled us to get out of the office as well as run on-site activities in collaboration with to support the local community and unwind from work. There are many events in the town such as wine tasting, day trips to bath etc and there are also weekly events to get away from the office e.g. 5 a side is played on mondays after work and friday lunch times.
