    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I highly enjoyed the placement while in the office environment. Our floor was open plan such that conversation and teamwork flowed easily. The canteen was substantial, with free fruit and soft drinks, table tennis, table football, even a massage chair. However, when covid arrived on the scene, working from home was necessary. It wasn't unenjoyable, but I didn't look forward to going to work like I did when we were at the office.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Very much so. I think there's two parts to this. I worked in a small team with a great culture of inclusivity. I was given responsibility and trusted with substantial tasks such that I feel felt valued. Therefore, I was incentivised to also add value wherever I could. I believe my proactivity was appreciated by the team in a reciprocal value relationship.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My manager was always available to speak and give support/guidance when required. We had fortnightly 1:1s to catch up on work projects and next steps, but we also had frequent "Insights" conversations regarding current performance and future potential. We discussed areas of skill I would like to enhance, and we were able to set-up face-to-face time with customers and other beneficial opportunities to which I would not typically be exposed.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • The degree of work varied throughout the quarter. The last few weeks of each quarter and first few weeks of the next were typically more busy than middle-quarter. However, I never felt particularly overstretched or under-utilised. There were always multiple projects available that I could take up with colleagues if I had free time. Intel also offers LinkedIn Learning training, so I typically spent free hours honing my skills in various areas.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • As with the valued question, this is a two way street. My team was happy to give me significant responsibility for the areas I dealt with on a daily basis. However, I was eager to take on more responsibility wherever possible, such as entirely owning the process for the running of our quarterly external calls, and stepping up the production quality by using a new provider. I also took a much greater lead in the back-end management of two of our programs than previous interns had done. Some responsibility was given, but greater responsibility needs to be earned.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I absolutely believe the skills I developed will help in degree studies and later life. Teamwork and communication, especially multi-nationally, was practiced daily. My presentation skills were also stretched, I was able to return to University as a "placement champion" in November to talk to ~100 students on networking skills. My organisation and Office skills have all come a very long way in the last 12 months - much greater development than you get from university.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The general atmosphere was always enjoyable, great comradery. It was generally encouraged for employees to be in the office for the majority of the week (pre-covid of course), even though working-from-home was an option for most. Usually there was plenty of people in the office, and especially the first floor was always buzzing. For example around Christmas, everyone put up Christmas trees and decorations around our setups. The canteen was always lively throughout the day, for meetings and lunch.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The placement was certainly well organised, around 50 interns join Intel every year on a rolling basis. There are good procedures in place for training and on-boarding, especially the 5+ week handover period with the previous intern. The year was well-structured, and the fact that there was many other interns ensured you never felt alone or "the only". This gave room to live with other interns and ensure a significant social life outside of work.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I was impressed by the opportunities for personal development that were available to be explored. My manager 1:1s gave direction to options I may explore, but LinkedIn Learning trainings were always a back-up option for when Covid forced plans to fall through. Intel certainly invested in multiple local training sessions, I attended a local training on SSD memory. With the shift to online, Intel ran multiple online courses on varied topics, from virtual coaching to building a performance mindset.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Intel is certainly a great place to work. They invest in your development, build a culture where responsibility is encouraged, and provide significant other benefits both inside and outside of the office. However, interns returning to Intel usually go into operations unless various other roles happen to arise. The standard graduate path is not particularly appealing, as it can take years to work out of the entry point. Therefore, I'm not clear this is the best path for a new graduate, but returning to Intel later in life may be a better decision for me.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Absolutely. With 50 interns on site, we had a great intern community. This was bolstered during the handover period, with ~100 interns (50 old, 50 new) all together. It was easy to make friends and get to know new people. There was always room for a chat in the office, and outside of work we were able to run multiple events such as frequent pub quizes, intern meals out and various other nights out when called for.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Compared to Bath where I go to University, Swindon is very cheap. Our property was ~£400/month each, but was very nice, and many cheaper options would have been available. We lived very close to an Aldi, which meant I could do a weekly shop for about 20 quid. Some of the bars and pubs in Old Town (main socialising place) were expensive, but there was always drinks offers on, and 2 Wetherspoons which came in handy.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Swindon Nightlife is far from spectacular, but you're not exactly in the middle of nowhere. Wood Street is the main location, with Star Bar, Mackenzies and Brass Monkey being popular stops. Longs' was also an option for 2-for-1 cocktails. There was also a nightclub near Old Town called "Tree", which was somewhat underwhelming and we only went once. Delve into New Town and you'll find the two Wetherspoons, the Wyvern Tavern that has a pool table and "Edge", the quintessential cheap-and-still-not-particularly-cheerful nightclub. The people made it fun, but the venues aren't exactly spectacular.

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Opportunities were always being emailed to get involved with outside of work. Volunteering was a big one, and we designated two days as a wider team to do some gardening at a local school and park. This was a great chance to get away from work for an afternoon but also bond closer with your team. Our Christmas day out offered a similar chance, we went to Bristol and did an escape room, then had drinks.
