    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • Really enjoyed working here as I got so many different opportunities and learning experiences. The team I worked with treated me as an equal and taught me so much in a years time. The office and work environment is very comfortable and flexible. There aren't many restrictions and the dresscode is casual. You feel at home in the office and the equipment is well kept and generally very new. The modern building yet open space allows you to go for a nice walk in your breaks.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • The team I worked with treated me as an equal and taught me so much in a years time. I worked in a global team meaning I was the only one based in the UK but our meetings were very inclusive and they were generally considerate of the time differences. I also got the opportunity to fly out to New York to meet my team for a meeting and it was a great bonding experience and I'm glad I didn't get to miss out on face to face opportunities.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My official manager had 1:1s with me weekly where we chatted about work load and anything I wanted to bring up. I felt free to talk about anything especially in the covid-19 times where things were unsure we kept each other up to date and I felt like it I needed time off or a break my manager would've been really understanding and supportive. I never felt pressured or stressed about honestly talking about how I felt.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Depending on my projects there were times where I was really busy and had to get things done with strict deadlines but most of the time I worked at a comfortable pace. If I felt like I didn't have enough work, my team would help me get opportunities or find some work so I rarely had nothing to do. I also managed to be connected to teams working in areas I was interested in so I got opportunities to travel to different sites as well.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I got the opportunity to lead a project and work as a developer as well as a project manager in it. Most other times I worked on projects with my other team members and got equal responsibility with them but for that project I got to manage I got to work and learn new skills in areas that placement students wouldn't usually get. I learnt to manage work flow, how to work out funding etc.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I learnt so many skills that are unique to big companies that will also help me stand out on applications. I feel like I can be thrown into most situations and still manage thanks to this placement. I'm comfortable with management, development, different work flows, adapting to new environments etc. I feel like this placement has given me the best starter I could have asked for in terms of industry experience and I'll be able to apply what I've learnt to my next job.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • It was a very relaxed atmosphere and there weren't many restrictions. Its easy and safe to travel to the workplace either by bus or by car. The office was very large so it was always easy to find a quiet place, as well as hold events. Depending on the team you were in, you might be able to go to different events and different teams have different team values. My team was global so we couldn't have christmas/birthday celebrations but I'm sure other teams did.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • There was a big reorganisation before I started my placement which meant that I was moved to a different team and manager last minute. This meant I was in a less ideal situation of having my team being based in the US and me being the only one in the UK. Luckily my new team were very welcoming but I did feel lonely and left out sometimes in the UK. I think this should have been better organised.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I was given most support, materials and equipment I needed. I knew that if I wanted to learn skills and start coursera/udemy courses that would help my work, the company would fund these. I think there is rarely any issues with Pfizer providing training for their employees, however HR can be a bit disorganised sometimes so if you need to do something that needs to go through them you might hit a roadblock if you're unlucky.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • The graduate scheme is limited as you can only work in sales/marketing but there's always the option of being hired part time in your final year and maybe being offered a job after graduation. I don't think that's an option for me specifically as my team are based in the US but I might go back to the company to apply for a different area that I have connections with that is based in the UK.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • There was a Facebook group created to help us meet each other and if you live out then it will definitely help to spend time with other placement students (60+ each year)

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Difficult to say I lived at home.
