    About You

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy the virtual experience?
  • Fantastic opportunity to explore more of the values and principles behind the Teach First mission. I thought that the focus on the competencies was very insightful, useful, and gave a clear structure to the two-day experience. The range of speakers was great as well as the mix of activities, particularly the debates. This was a great opportunity to discuss and develop our ideas and to hear the opinions and thoughts of others. Overall, the experience was very worthwhile.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued during your time at the company or firm?
  • I felt incredibly valued and I got the impression that many others on the taster experience did as well. I was listened to well, received very good feedback and constructive criticism, and learned how to encourage my personal development. The leaders seemed genuinely enthusiastic to engage with as many people as possible and keen to promote the important message of Teach First. This was positive as it made me much more enthusiastic in joining Teach First.

  • 3. How much guidance/support did you receive during the virtual experience?
  • I received lots of guidance and support across the online session. Each activity provided an opportunity to review our own performance and the performance of others. The resources helped in this and a lot of time and effort had clearly gone into making the resources as clear and helpful as possible. Again, the leaders were very supportive, respectful and encouraging which helped to make sure everyone felt as though their contributions were valued and worthwhile.

  • 4. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and information you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • The skills and competencies of Teach First are not only essential for the teaching environment, but also in many other aspects of life and lots of other careers. Having the opportunity to develop these was very rewarding and worthwhile, with a good mixture of personal and group reflection. The information helped to place the wider context of Teach First in perspective, with a real and continued focus on educational inequality and the statistics that highlight this.

    The Company

  • 5. How well structured was the virtual experience?
  • The experience was very well structured, with a clear timetable of events across the two days given to us at the start. Timings were adhered to well and if things did run over slightly, it was always ensured that this didn't affect other things that were scheduled. The was a good structure in the flow of activities which made sure there was pace and dynamism to the schedule. This made sure the events stayed interesting.

  • 6. How was the general atmosphere during your virtual experience?
  • The atmosphere was maintained across the two days which is particularly difficult to do in the new 'online world'. The enthusiasm of the leaders and participants didn't fade at all and we were encouraged at all times to stay engaged, active and involved. All participants seemed willing and comfortable to get involved and were encouraged to do so regularly, even though it can be daunting to offer an opinion in front of new people. Everyone was respectful and inclusive.

  • 7. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I felt that Teach First were eager to make us feel valued and wanted. This is especially important for this line of work, and hearing from other people who had already done the programme, it was good to hear of all their positive experiences along the journey. The whole point of the programme is focused on personal training and development to be the best person and the best teacher that we can be. I feel this was made very clear.

  • 8. To what extent did the virtual experience help you to understand what it would be like to have a full time role with the company or firm?
  • There was a great deal of information provided across all aspects of the programmes available at Teach First. This was from a range of sources including current leaders of employees, previous trainees and looking at the wider context of how the whole organisation has fighting educational inequality at its core. All talks covered a different aspect of the journey from lots of different people who had already done it so hearing their experiences was particularly worthwhile.

  • 9. How much did the virtual experience help you in understanding the company culture?
  • The continued and emphasised focus on the fight against educational inequality was made very clear and was linked to many of the activities we did. This was useful as it meant that the fundamental message and ethos of the organisation was continually reinforced. Again, hearing from other people who had already been involved meant that there was lots of detailed insight into different aspects of the programme from challenges and difficulties, to the more rewarding aspects of the job.

  • 10. How valuable was the content in helping you to decide on your future career path?
  • The online taster session has been instrumental in helping me decide that I almost certainly would like to get involved with Teach First. The atmosphere of the discussions and the activities as well has hearing first-hand the experiences of others showed me that the programme is what I'd like to do in future. The particular emphasis on the competencies was welcome so that in everything you did, you could reflect on the extent to which you hit different competencies.

    Everything Else

  • 11. Were you paid or reimbursed adequately for this experience?

  • 12. Were there opportunities for networking and meeting other employees of the company or firm?
  • There were some opportunities to network via the Facebook group, however, due to the nature of the current situation and the online world, there was not much opportunity to network. This could be something to look at in the future in case there. I heard lots of different opinions and ideas from many different people across the two days and it would be good to have an opportunity to get back in touch with some of these people.

  • 13. How were the networking/ social event opportunities?
  • Again, due to the nature of the situation we find ourselves in, there wasn't much opportunity to socialise. However, there was a quiz which gave us all an opportunity to get to know people a little more personally and have some fun in a less formal situation. This was especially welcome after having spent times with lots of different groups of people across the two days in breakout room activities so this less formal activity was welcome.

    3/5

  • 14. Did you find out about activities that employees can get involved in outside of work?
  • Yes. There was lots of information relating to the wider Teach First programmes and how we could get involved.

    4/5

  • 15. Would you recommend this virtual experience to a friend?
  • 5/5
