About You
Absolutely loved the whole experience, amazed by how upbeat and energised the staff were. The sessions were concise, informative and insightful and gave us a chance to network with people from all over the county and ask questions in real time. 100% would recommend anyone who is thinking about getting into teaching and wants to change educational inequality for the better to give Taster a try!
We had discussions about educational inequality and everyone had a chance to voice their opinions and share stories of their own experiences. The facilitators were really great during the discussions and took everything we said positively. I really felt like I was part of the Teach First community during the two days
There were instructions given to us on a power point slide as well as worksheets which had lots of info on them as well. They had already provided us with access to the learning hub so we could familiarise ourselves with it and they also held icebreaker sessions so we could get to know each other and get more comfortable using zoom prior to the two day Taster experience
I have learnt so much about time management, the importance of planning and organising, I’ve developed a deeper understanding and humility, respect and empathy and self evaluation, which are great life skills, specifically for becoming a teacher
The Company
It was extremely well structured, we had a timetable so we knew what to expect. The sessions were short and manageable with regular breaks and an hour for lunch each day, each session followed on from the next and we didn’t bounce around subjects, it was all very clear and well- structured
It was a very positive atmosphere. Everyone was listened to and we were able to ask questions, give our opinions and were able to give honest feedback. Felt very supported by the teach first facilitators and they were very passionate, energetic, enthusiastic and extremely motivating and influential about the whole experience
They’ve held webinars on topics surrounding educational inequality which we had invitations to. I felt that they were really interested in making the experience enjoyable, helpful and informative for everyone. It also felt like they wanted to get to know us as individuals, even though this is just a Taster experience
We had the opportunity to deliver a teaching episode that was 8 minutes long and we got constructive feedback to help us improve and keep in mind for the development centre. Although I feel this taster was more focused towards the ethos of Teach First rather than actual work experience, we still did get to hear about how people currently going to programme felt.
They emphasised a lot on their values of the company and went into detail of the mission of Teach First. I could get the impression on this from the staff as well as they spoke to us when delivering sessions and from the guest speakers that they really are all about the students
It was brilliant to have the opportunity to try out teaching and to receive the feedback. During the sessions they often spoke about the future and what scheme we could apply for and even spoke about how we could take on leadership roles within schools once we had completed the training.
Everything Else
I was able to transfer my train ticket for another day so didn’t lose out on any money
They had a list of contact details for people who worked on the insight team and they also talked about how we can get involved with university recruiters to get more information on applying to the programme. They created a Facebook group so we could all meet each other and network for the future
They gave us a lot of time for discussions with our peers in breakout rooms so we could get to know each other. It would have been better to get to know the people from external companies and guest speakers to get their contact details for future reference just to get more networking links. They also had a quiz after day one to allow us to socialise
No, Taster was more about what it was like to train on the programme.
It was such a good and insightful experience to allow us to develop our skills for our CV, gather a greater insight into the mission of Teach First and the importance of the teachers and students and the community that benefits from it and also motivates me to want to make change happen.
