    About You

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy the virtual experience?
  • I really enjoyed my virtual experience - I found it very interesting, useful and helpful and it gave me lots of experience for the future teaching career I want to go into. My favourite part was the workshop where we had to plan and perform a lesson and then got feedback on it afterwards.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued during your time at the company or firm?
  • I felt completely valued - everyone was very friendly and welcoming and created a very positive working environment. At the start we had a session about the charities values and how they strive to support everyone regardless of family background or income. The feedback they gave us throughout was extremely encouraging and made me feel really valued.

  • 3. How much guidance/support did you receive during the virtual experience?
  • I received a lot of guidance and support for every session during the experience and after each session we had to reflect on how well it had gone. There was a lot of personal development and reflection time and lots of helpful feedback. On the online learning hub we were given resources to guide us through each session.

  • 4. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and information you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • They will give me skills for life because I want to go into a teaching role and this gave me teaching experience and feedback to help me with this future career. Planning and performing my own lesson has given me skills in communication, planning and organisation that I will be able to use in my degree studies and beyond.

    The Company

  • 5. How well structured was the virtual experience?
  • The virtual experience was extremely well structured - we had a set amount of time for each activity and we were given a timetable beforehand so we could see how the experience would be structured. Everything was very well planned down to the minute and the experience was blocked into different sessions.

  • 6. How was the general atmosphere during your virtual experience?
  • The general atmosphere was really fun and friendly - everyone was always smiling and it was obvious everyone really cared and wanted to help create a positive learning environment. There was a mutual feeling of respect and understanding between everyone. We even had a virtual quiz involved to get to know everyone and have some fun.

  • 7. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • The charity invested everything into personal training and development as that was the aim of the experience. There was several personal development sessions throughout and after every session there was a chance to reflect and receive feedback from the charity and the other peers on the programme. There was a big emphasis on developing and expanding my existing skill set.

  • 8. To what extent did the virtual experience help you to understand what it would be like to have a full time role with the company or firm?
  • It really helped me understand what a full time role would be like as I met most of the key people that work for the charity and ambassadors of the teacher training programme and was able to ask them questions about their experiences. We had two separate sessions asking these people any questions we had and got a deeper insight into opportunities to work for the charity.

  • 9. How much did the virtual experience help you in understanding the company culture?
  • It helped me massively in understanding the company culture as in the personal development sessions we discussed the core values of the charity and how we could improve on these values ourselves. There was also a session at the start explaining the charities vision to create a fair education for all.

  • 10. How valuable was the content in helping you to decide on your future career path?
  • The content was extremely valuable - it gave me the confidence and helped me confirm to myself that I do want to go into teaching. Being able to plan and teach my own lesson to an audience helped me realise how much I enjoy it and the feedback they gave me was really useful.

    Everything Else

  • 11. Were you paid or reimbursed adequately for this experience?
  • Because it is a charity, you are not paid but you get more out of it than money anyway - you go in for the experience not the pay. Because of corona, it was made into a virtual experience so there were no expenses to be reimbursed but if the experience in London had gone ahead as previously planned, we would have been reimbursed our travel costs.

  • 12. Were there opportunities for networking and meeting other employees of the company or firm?
  • There was plenty of opportunities for this - two sessions during the experience. All of the sessions were run by employees of the charity and you could ask them any questions. Question and answer sessions involved ambassadors of the charity, current employees of the charity, people on the training programme currently and people from the charities partner organisations.

  • 13. How were the networking/ social event opportunities?
  • The networking opportunities were brilliant as we were able to ask any questions to the charity employees and ambassadors. The social events were also really good because we went into zoom breakout rooms to do various different activities and during our lunch breaks. We also had a virtual quiz to get to know people.

  • 14. Did you find out about activities that employees can get involved in outside of work?
  • We were given a lot of information about summer placements and experiences with partner charities that we could do outside of the training programme. Teach First run their own summer STEM offering as well. In one of the sessions we were able to ask questions to people from the partner charities, for example Team up.

    5/5

  • 15. Would you recommend this virtual experience to a friend?
  • I would definitely recommend this experience to any friend interested in going into teaching. It gives you a great insight into what the profession is like and further opportunities about how you can get into teaching outside of the traditional university routes. Even if you are not interested in teaching, you would still be able to take away many new skills from this experience.
