    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I enjoyed my placement year, as I worked in such a wonderful team with lots of teamwork and collaboration. I was very lucky, as not every team was as collaborative and tentative to their student as mine, and they made sure I got everything I wanted out of my placement year.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • My colleagues asked me what I wanted out of my year, and made sure all these factors were included. My colleagues valued me as a colleague and not just an intern. However, some teams and departments definitely did not seem as inclusive towards their interns. I was also invited to social events with my colleagues which I am thankful for.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My manager gave me great support throughout the year, whilst also ensuring I had responsibility and didn't have my hand held all year. They really listen to your feedback and ensure your year is adapted to suit you best and fulfil your needs. This is part of the company culture and an aspect I loved.

    4/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Mostly very busy, however I did find that I had to continuously ask for more work as sometimes I would find myself with not much to do. Occasionally the intern does get forgotten in the team so you do have to ensure you are asking for work and letting your manager know your workload isn't sufficient.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given lots of responsibility when I asked for it. I was given whole projects to oversee which I thoroughly enjoyed and I don't think you'd get that at many other companies as an intern. The level of trust between the interns and the managers is huge and an aspect I loved.

    5/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I undoubtedly developed incredibly personal as well as professional skills that I would not otherwise have if I had not done a placement year. I have adopted skills I didn't even realise were so important until I did my placement year, and my managers were really keen to develop my skills and confidence throughout the year.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The general atmosphere was buzzy and fun. Its a casual working place, so everyone wears what they want and there is flexible hours so you don't feel like your manager is looking at the clock when you leave and arrive. Our area in particular was really buzzy and I really enjoyed working in an atmosphere like that.

    5/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Not very well organised in my opinion. I don't feel that the organisers were good at communication at all between themselves and the interns. When I joined, my contract was not even ready and I had to send a new one off. Communication was definitely an area that hindered my placement year at the start and I would've loved more contact and information when I asked for it.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • They really invested in my personal development. I was offered training sessions and also extra-curricular activities and groups I could join. The BMW Group culture is really centred around personal development, so if that aspect of work is important to you then BMW is a great company for a placement year.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Flexi Time

    Sports and Social Club

    National Travel

    Company Parties/Events

    Staff Sales/Staff Shop

    Working from home

    Healthcare/Dental

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I'd love to come back to BMW Group after graduation, as the company culture is something I love, and the general atmosphere and work/life balance is spot on. The idea of pursuing a career at BMW Group really excites me, as its such an exciting industry to be a part of.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • There are events such as the Christmas party which is good fun. There isn't a huge social scene between fellow students, as we all kept to ourselves and our own teams. My team had a great social scene and often went for drinks outside of work which I really loved.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • High, as Farnborough is just outside of London and prices are still relatively high. We would often go into London to socialise and this was very expensive. Living in this area is also expensive as it is on the Surrey border, however I do not regret doing a placement here instead of at a company in London which would have been more expensive.

    4/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • The nightlife around Farnborough is not very good but relatively cheap. Often we would go into London where the company's agencies are and we would go out there, however this was always relatively expensive and would be hard to get home as the last train was at midnight so it would be a rush.

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Yes, there are diversity and inclusion groups that you can be a part of which are great to put on your CV, and these groups hold events and charity events which you can be a part of. There is also activities such as running and yoga that you can be part of.
