    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I have thoroughly enjoyed my placement year at Rolls-Royce. I have been immersed into a team and been given responsibility from the very start of my placement. I have developed several skills, such as communication, professionalism and adaptability and I have been able to develop my legal knowledge in several commercial areas.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I felt very valued by my colleagues. I know that they view me as an equal team member and anything that they have been involved in, they have always included me. It is not just my team who have been friendly, but the whole office is very welcoming and appreciative of the work Interns do.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I have been heavily supported throughout the entirety of my placement. I have daily calls with my team which gives us the opportunity to speak up if we have any problems or need support. I have not only had my manager who I could go to, but I have also had my own supervisor.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • As I have said previously, I have been given so much responsibility throughout the entirety of my placement. I have been very busy everyday, as I have been part of a small team. I have had several projects to work on and I am always involved with supporting my team with various other tasks.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I have been given a lot of responsibility, especially towards the end of my placement year. I am responsible for drafting legal communications and for answering queries on behalf of my team. I have also had the opportunity to lead several of our team meetings and discuss legal topics in the news.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • My experience at Rolls-Royce and the skills I have developed, will greatly assist me in my degree and future job roles. I aim to become a commercial solicitor and having gained experience in a variety of commercial law areas, this has allowed me to decipher what topics I find interesting and would like to advance upon in my degree and future career.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The general atmosphere in my office was relaxed, but vibrant at the same time. There would be periods where the office was quiet, as everyone was very busy, however just as many periods where the office had a buzz of chatter and laughter. I have always felt relaxed working in the office, as it is never completely silent.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The placement overall has been very well organised. I was given a welcome pack and told where to come to begin work on the first day. I was also offered the opportunity to work in a different department for period of time, in order to gain exposure to different parts of the business. This also was very well organised.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I have been given just as many training opportunities, as everyone else employed by Rolls-Royce. I have participated in several trainings to advance upon various skills. These include: Antitrust Workshop, Networking Training, Communication Training, Delegation Training. In terms of development, I have had monthly meetings with my manager and supervisor, who have both monitored my development and provided me with feedback on how to improve in certain aspects.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Future employment prospects are very appealing within the organisation. Regularly employees are notified of any vacancies within the Company. I feel if you are able to make connections and establish yourself as a trustworthy employee, there are definitely opportunities to progress within the business. There have been several instances where Interns have gone on to become Graduates and then gain permanent positions within the Company.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Yes, there is a good social scene amongst fellow Interns. There are a lot of Interns employed by the Company and many share accomodation together in the centre of Chichester. Student nights are typically on a Thursday and Interns take full advantage of this. There have also been opportunities to socialise with colleagues. There was an office hike and an office Christmas party.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • I shared a room with boyfriend in Emsworth, which is a town close to Chichester. The room in a shared house was around £500 a month. Socialising in Chichester and Portsmouth was relatively cheap. Portsmouth was cheaper than Chichester, however it ultimately depends on which venue you choose to go to.

    4/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • The Nightlife in Chichester was good, however I would say that a short train journey to Portsmouth is worthwhile, if you are looking for a more vibrant night out. There are more clubs and pubs in Portsmouth and Portsmouth University means that there is no shortage of fellow students in Portsmouth.

    5/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There were definitely many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work. THe Interns are very sociable and are normally doing something most week nights. On the otherhand, I have also met up with my team outside of work and gone for food and drinks several times. During lockdown, we have also participated in quizzes. There are many opportunities to socialise, if that is something you are looking to do.
