The Role
My placement year at Microsoft has been very enjoyable. There is an amazing culture at Microsoft, everyone is so welcoming with great focus on encouraging a diverse and inclusive environment. I'm really happy that I had the chance to have a placement year with Microsoft, the technology industry is very exciting!
I feel truly valued by my colleagues at Microsoft, the people here are very welcoming and encouraging. Everyone has an amazing story to tell and are passionate about what they do. There is a strong sense of community at Microsoft; the people are friendly and are happy to have catch-ups to answer any questions you may have.
My supervisor is amazing, he is always looking for new opportunities for me to engage with so that I can learn new things and build up my skillset. Management are really friendly, they treat everyone with respect and nurture a positive culture. There have also been many networking opportunities throughout the placement year and it has been fun to meet a variety of inspirational people.
Each day is different, there was a variety of interesting work to do and I was able to manage my time effectively. I was able to put myself forward for a variety of opportunities to keep productive and also create impact. It is fun to be able to work on role-specific content as well as on our stretch project (a side project that we have the opportunity to participate in whilst on placement).
I was given a good amount of responsibility during my placement. Microsoft really values interns and understands the positive impact they bring to the company. My manager empowered me with a variety of tasks to work on so that I could continue to build my skillset and show leadership skills.
I really encourage considering placement years as it gives brilliant insight into the working environment. We have opportunity to do training and gain certification on a variety of qualifications. I feel that I have really grown my skillset through working at Microsoft and will be able to apply these skills to my degree studies.
The Company
The atmosphere is fantastic, there is a great focus on Diversity and Inclusion at the company which makes everyone feel empowered. There is a supportive network at Microsoft, they truly care about each employee and want to ensure that everybody feels valued. I have thoroughly enjoyed working here at Microsoft.
The placement year is really well planned out. There is focus on role, stretch project and personal development. From the beginning, we always received great communications about our placement so that we knew what to expect and the next steps. HR are great, really approachable and friendly; they are always there to support the interns and answer any questions they may have.
We have a library full of amazing training resources in our offices at Thames Valley Park, Reading. We also have access to a variety of certifications and earn credentials that we could keep and add to our CV. Microsoft places a lot of importance in learning and building skills.

There are many socials and ways to network with fellow interns throughout the placement year. There is a large number of interns which is great as you could meet so many new people and make friends. There is a variety of social activities that we did such quiz nights or dinners.
We have stretch projects and also other activities too! There is an on-site gym, where they also offer personal trainer sessions and fitness classes. There is also a running club, netball club... many different clubs to get involved in! There is a great work/life balance, with many ways of socialising with others.
