    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • My placement year at Oracle allowed me to work in a fantastic environment with great people. I've really enjoyed my time at Oracle and believe that I have learnt a lot which will help me massively within my future career. You are exposed to a wide- range of opportunities to grow and develop, I am very happy that I took my placement here

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • The best thing about Oracle is the people. My team were very supportive and tried to get me involved in as much as possible. The culture is very much that your internship works two ways... you are there to do a job, but more importantly your team push that they are there to help you. I found that I could ask to be more involved in things that I was interested in/ enjoyed, and could ask to do less of the stuff that I didn't enjoy as much

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My manager was extremely supportive and always just a phone call away if I needed anything. Although I had one manager, I found that I had a full team that I could ring if I needed any help. My experience has been great because my manager has allowed me to find my own way within the company, rather than watching over me all the time. I have experienced a very hands off management style which has enabled me to get involved in lots more

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Every day was different and my work load shifted daily. In my role I found that there was always something to be getting on with, and I always found myself rather busy. I was always getting asked to get involved in different projects, even if this wasn't specific to my job role. If you do have times with little work, there are always charity events or training that you can get involved in. If you ask then you can always find work; even if that's helping out another team

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • My experience this year has very much been independent working, and therefore I think that this has allowed me to have a lot of responsibility over tasks. I have been able to plan large events with little supervision... I believe that my team has really trusted my judgement this year. I had the huge responsibility of being the main point of contact for CRUK this year, including taking the lead in internally organising within Oracle their huge Winter Run event

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I have learnt a lot this year which I believe will significantly help me going forward. Foremost, the experience of being in a large office and working among a team is essential for a later career. There are a lot of core competencies that I will take away from this year, but I have also learnt a lot about the technology sector and Financial Solutions that I definitely did not know before starting my role.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The office varied on different days... sometimes very busy and exciting, others a little more quiet. However, everybody in the office was always very friendly and it was a great place to be. The offices have great facilities also (e.g. kitchens, canteen etc.) so I really enjoyed going in every day

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • I believe that my internship was very well organised. When I started my placement I was handed over a few routine tasks/ projects meaning that I always had these things to be working on (as well as then getting additional work and projects). Throughout the year we have been offered various training opportunities and workshops/ talks

    4/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I have been taken to big events to expand my knowledge, as well as being asked to complete training. All of these things I believe have developed my skills and will lead to me leaving Oracle with a lot more knowledge. The training is always available, but I do wish that I had taken advantage of this more

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Flexi Time

    Subsidised Canteen

    National Travel

    Company Parties/Events

    Working from home

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I would definitely return to Oracle as I have found it to be a great company to work for. I would return mainly due to the company culture and how amazing all my colleagues have been. I believe that there is a lot of potential to grow a career within Oracle

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • I found that there was a great relationship within our intern community. I really enjoyed the fact that there were a lot of interns (approx 60) all working in different areas of the organisation. I have met some great friends this year and I have been able to get involved in social activities with other interns throughout my time

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • The cost of living in Reading was a little more than what I have been used to, due to it being in the South of England. However, it was not a significant difference. Rent was a little higher and you will find that drinks on a night out are likely to be on the more expensive side. But again, nothing was too expensive and easily affordable on your wage

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • The nightlife in Reading isn't my favourite, I definitely noticed a difference from previously living in big cities and used to that nightlife. There are still good places to go on a night out... there is still a nightlife for sure. There are a lot of well know bar chains (revolution, revs de cuba...) to have a good time, and lots of nice restaurants

    2/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Oracle offer many opportunities to get involved in fundraising/ volunteering activities which was really good. I completed the PalaceToPlace bike ride which was 45 miles from Buckingham Place to Windsor Castle. There were also events such as The Yomp, Tough Mudder, Race For Life, The Winter Run etc. to get involved in. I think that one of the best things about working for Oracle was the extra curriculum events that you can take part in
