The Role
My placement was very enjoyable, as I got to work with a lot of customers, giving me insight and experience of working in a number of different environments. I loved being able to experience how other companies work and learning to adapt well to new environments.
I was really worried when I first started, as my role was very heavily customer facing and I was nervous if people would see me as ‘just an intern’. Throughout my year I was pleased to find this was never the case and I was treated and valued like anyone else, given real projects to work on.
Everyone in the team was super helpful and always willing to give you a hand whenever you needed. My team were great in making sure I always had what I needed and never felt lost of out of the loop with anything, and I never felt nervous asking for help anytime I needed it.
When I was travelling and working with customers on site my days were quite busy, and travelling to and from added to these hours. However the balance between working on site and from home or in the office was really good as I could have less busy days in the office to catch up on other work I had.
I was really glad to be given real life projects to work on alongside my team as it really gave me that first hand insight into how the company works and what my team does. However, most of the time I was assisting others and helping with whatever was needed rather than owning my own work or projects.
I think my placement year has been beyond helpful in equipping me with skills that I can use after I have finished my degree. It’s given me an upper hand compared to those who did not do a placement as I have learnt a variety of skills that just any other graduate may not have.
The Company
It was great, having all the interns in the office felt like you always had support nearby when you needed it. Everyone was really friendly and the office was a very welcoming environment, where I never felt out of place. Having a designated area where my team sat was really nice to be able to catch up with people I didn’t always get to see when I was out of the office.
It was overall really good, we always had contact with HR with regular events throughout the year where all the interns would get together and see each other. We always knew who to go to if we never needed anything and the whole of the intern community was really well organised overall.
We had regular sessions with our managers regarding our progress and how we wanted to improve going forward which was great to look back on and make our development plans. We always had access to training materials and qualifications that we were encouraged to try out to improve our skills further and learn new things throughout our year.

Working from home
I am really keen to pursue a graduate role within the company as I loved the culture and the environment of working there. I am aware it is quite a competitive process but I felt like I really fitted in well, which makes me keen to build my career further here
The Culture
The whole of the intern community was really close and because of our committee we had regular social events throughout the year which helped us all become really good friends. There were also a number of early in career events throughout the year which helped us to meet other people such as graduates and apprentices.
I lived at home so I’m not completely sure what the cost of living would have been for interns who were renting. However from what I know from people I spoke to it was fairly reasonable and similar to what they would be paying at uni. The cost of socialising was as expected, but not a great deal to do in the area.
Compared to my university town it wasn’t that great but it depends on your own preference and what you like. We also had a number of house parties where interns would get together every now and then which were fun. Overall the nightlife was ok but could be a lot better.
There were a number of sporting events that the intern community set up that people were keen to get involved in. In addition to this, we also had regular social events set up by the intern committee outside of work for us to socialise and get to know each other better
