    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I found the entire internship experience rewarding, fun and challenging. It was such a great learning experience and to understand the way in which the business worked was truly helpful. At times however I felt perhaps I could offer a little more, and wanted to get involved everywhere and in all parts of the business.

    4/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Within some of the teams I worked with I certainly felt valued, however finding a solidified team to integrate into can be difficult, and sometimes I felt as though I wasn't particularly part of one team. It was good for learning however to learn between different industries and their ways of working.

    3/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My management and mentoring throughout my intern year was exceptional, and I had constant support throughout. When I had any personal or work related queries, there was always a quick response and always time made for a 1 on 1 meeting. The connects and reviews of my performance helped hugely too.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I felt like the balance between busy and free was fair, however it usually worked as you'd be particularly busy one week, then perhaps not busy the next. To make use of the free time it's great to partake in certifications, or any of the badges you can obtain with learning.

    3/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I feel as though I had some responsibilities throughout the intern year, where people would rely on me for specific aspects, however there wasn't a project where I was the sole reliant factor for. I can understand this though however, and I made use of every opportunity I had in them.

    4/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • The business knowledge and acumen has been so valuable for myself as I move into my career. Being able to network has also allowed for me to keep contact with the people I met within the business, which I certainly use to my benefit. I wish to keep in contact and hopefully explore exciting opportunities with them.

    5/5

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The office atmosphere was relaxed and friendly. There would always be people you recognise and could have a coffee catch up with, which is really handy especially within the Microsoft offices where there are coffee shops all over. It was easy to book rooms or book study rooms too to focus.

    5/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • I found the intern year to be reasonably set up, I think perhaps the first couple of months are difficult to understand the expectations, and would of been useful to have that clarity of what we're expected to do, the contacts to identify and where to make a start however.

    4/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • The learning days Microsoft had were so beneficial especially when skilling up and undertaking the certifications. They allow you to invest time into a specific area, and the PowerApp App in a Day workshops allowed me to learn an area I wasn't comfortable with before. They really are so good to join.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • the future employment prospects are so exciting within Microsoft, where you even get the opportunity to shadow people around the business in your area of interest. The graduate schemes and intern schemes are a great step in the door towards this.

    5/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • The social scene was fair, and was occasional. There was an inclusive culture around this, and all of the cohort was invited to each event and everyone had the choice to join or not.

    4/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • The area of Reading was fairly expensive to live, however I commuted in from Kent so was fairly adapted to the way of living by then.

    5/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • The nightlife was always lively, and the bars and clubs would usually be full on a weekend. The town centre was always a hub for social events, and you'd always run into people you knew there. It was a great way to unwind in the evenings and weekend.

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There were many sports clubs/activities nearby to get involved with. TVP is positioned next to a river, where multiple rowing competitions take place and is especially nice on a hot day. There is also football, rugby and a variety of other sports to play.
