    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I am in a marketing role at Microsoft and love the work and opportunities. You are able to pursue areas/pieces of work you are interested in and believe would help develop you. There is even a 20% stretch project to pursue any other passions you would like to develop further.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I always felt valued by my colleagues - it can sometimes feel daunting when you are EIC (imposter syndrome). But at Microsoft your thoughts, perspectives and ideas are always valued. The ethos is 'come as you are, do as you love' - so never be afraid to be yourself!

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I have a bi-weekly 1:1 with my manager and also have a quarterly review process called a connect. These opportunities allow a platform to discuss when I may need support and guidance - therefore your manager is never too far away when you need advice!

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • In a company like Microsoft you can always be busy and there are always lots of projects you can engage in. If I have the bandwidth I am empowered to take up projects which align to my personal development plan and help me thrive!

    5/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • You are given a lot of responsibility from the outset. Within 5 weeks of joining Microsoft I had joined a project which had direct accountability to the UK CEO. This project has lasted all year and has been great exposure for me on my internship!

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • The training opportunities at Microsoft are endless. I study Marketing at University and have done a Microsoft Marketing certification (which never expires). I also wanted to challenge myself and do a technical exam which I completed to. Whatever your interests are - there is an certification to up-skill!

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The office atmosphere is great - everyone is really friendly and welcoming! There are board rooms for more formal meetings but swings and beanbag chairs if you want to take a more informal approach to a meeting!

    4/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • 4/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Microsoft heavily invests in you as an individual. You have a quarterly review which allows you to reflect on what you have achieved so far and what is to come. For me these reviews have been incredibly impactful and helped develop me personally and professionally!

    5/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Subsidised Canteen

    Sports and Social Club

    Subsidised/Company Gym

    National Travel

    Company Parties/Events

    Staff Sales/Staff Shop

    Working from home

    Healthcare/Dental

    4/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • 4/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • 3/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Most interns choose to live in Reading where the main campus is located. The cost of living and socialising in Reading is significantly lower than in London. Reading is not the most lively town but it has everything you need and is only 20 minutes from London on a high-speed train.

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • 3/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Yes there are activities to be involved in outside of work. For example, I started a women's football team which allowed women from all over the organisation to come together and socialise. I have many colleagues who joined different sports clubs and social clubs external to Microsoft.
