    About You

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
  • Morgan Stanley's Technology Spring Insight Program was a great opportunity to learn more about the firm and make connections with some really interesting people! Due to the disruption caused by coronavirus, Morgan Stanley was unable to host the program at their offices—this meant that certain aspects of it weren't quite as expected, but it's unlikely that this will affect future insight interns! One of my only complaints about the program was the lack of hands-on interaction, but that was entirely due to the nature of current circumstances.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued during your time at the company or firm?
  • During the insight program, us interns were constantly reminded about future opportunities within the firm, which was definitely encouraging. However, Morgan Stanley's selectiveness was also mentioned quite frequently, and a lot of emphasis was given to the traits that would be needed to pass the interviews for a summer analyst program. Also the tips were useful, it definitely reminded me that I was still being tested during the insight program.

  • 3. How much guidance/support did you receive during the insight?
  • There were some really useful talks on topics like how to ace pen-and-paper code interviews, and the importance of networking.

  • 4. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and information you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Although the insight program only lasted two days, I felt like I learned some valuable lessons during that time. The information session on networking offered advice that will definitely help me progress throughout my career—in fact, I've already started to implement some of their tips in my day-to-day life! There were also sessions specific to careers in technology that influenced what I want to do in the future, and better prepared me for technology-based interviews.

    The Company

  • 5. How well structured was the insight?
  • Given the disruption caused by coronavirus, I thought that the insight program was structured well. The sessions came in a good order that allowed for certain topics to be built upon sequentially. There were also lighter sessions interspersed between the denser ones to make it easier to process. The program also included sessions allowing for a lot of interaction, so that everyone had opportunities to ask as many questions as they would like.

  • 6. How was the general atmosphere during your insight?
  • Sitting at home in your room listening to a webinar isn't quite the same as dressing up in business attire for a work day at Morgan Stanley's offices in Canary Wharf. But with that said, all of the insight program hosts acknowledged the unusual circumstances and did their best to make the program as exciting as it could be. It was also really exciting to meet a bunch of Morgan Stanley employees and interns alike!

  • 7. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Basically the entirety of the program was targeted toward teaching the interns about the working of the company and training us for future interviews, so that we'd be better equipped to work at the firm in the future. Many higher-ups in the company also devoted their time to teaching the insight interns about their divisions within in the company, and the work that they are doing.

  • 8. To what extent did the insight help you to understand what it would be like to have a full time role with the company or firm?
  • The insight program definitely gave me a firmer grasp of what a larger role at Morgan Stanley would look like. A lot of emphasis was put on the summer analyst and STEP programs (which are intermediate steps between spring insight intern and full-time employee), and although there was a lot of variety between the work that people were doing, one thing was the same: a lot of responsibility and accountability were required for success.

  • 9. How much did the insight help you in understanding the company culture?
  • I realized that Morgan Stanley's culture is heavily focused on innovation and contribution to the firm, and there is a lot of emphasis on being a self-starter. The company culture seems pretty driven, but also focused on collaboration, since that's an integral part of work life at Morgan Stanley. With that said, my perception is based only on two days on online sessions, so my understanding of the culture is still incomplete.

    Everything Else

  • 11. Were you paid or reimbursed adequately for this experience?

  • 12. Were there opportunities for networking and meeting other employees of the company or firm?
  • There were plenty of opportunities to meet employees at the firm and ask them questions about the work they were doing. In terms of networking, it was a little more difficult to do virtually, but as much support as possible was provided. Additionally, we were encouraged to stay in touch following the close of the program, and we've been told that there will hopefully be a chance for in person networking once it's safe to do so.

  • 13. How were the networking/ social event opportunities?
  • 4/5

  • 14. Did you find out about activities that employees can get involved in outside of work?
  • Some employees talked about their involvement in volunteer work and social development projects outside of their typical work at Morgan Stanley. Apparently it's pretty common for employees to devote time to social good, and it's something that the firm really encourages and supports! Aside from those activities, there were small things like good-spirited competitions held for interns, as well as designated "buddies" and drinks events.
