    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I really enjoyed my placement. I felt appropriately challenged and was given a range if tasks which held my interest and taught me a lot about the charity marketing world.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I felt very valued by my colleagues. I was always included; by being invited to team meetings and also being asked by members of my teams other than my manager to help with certain tasks. I was always made to feel comfortable asking anyone for help/advice. Some colleagues even sent me an email to check how I was during the coronavirus situation, which I thought was very nice and welcoming.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I was extremely well supported by my manager [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyPlacement Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions]. She struck a great balance between being there to help with any queries/difficulties I was having, but also giving me the independence to assert myself and my own initiative, and therefore throughout the internship I gained a lot confidence in my own ideas and task execution.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I was very busy throughout my internship - but never too much that it was overwhelming or I felt I didn't have the time. Because my manager was very good in having a variety of tasks for me to do at one time, I could easily swap between tasks to keep busy/have a change when I felt a bit tired of one particular tasks. It was also great because other colleagues chipped in with some tasks as well, so I was able to tackle a variety of challenges.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • As I said, my manager struck a great balance between being there to support me whilst also allowing me independence to complete tasks on my own without being overly directed. Because of this, I really felt that each task was my own and I could use my own ideas and initiative to achieve a positive result - which has given me a lot of confidence in the work place.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • As I am interested in going into charity marketing, the skills/training learnt and developed during the internship were exactly what I needed. I really developed my social media, research, organisation and communication skills. I was also given the opportunity to develop my design skills on Canva, which again was thanks to the independence I was given during the role as I could choose how to best execute a task and in this case it was through using Canva.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The internship was home-based so there was no office 'atmosphere' as such, but because I was often emailing/whatsapping colleagues and everyone was quick to respond, there was a great level of communication and support. When the team did meet on a monthly basis, the atmosphere was very friendly and relaxed, which was especially helpful when I was new and a bit nervous.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Very well organised. My manager herself is a very organised person, so has set up a system on an excel spreadsheet which made my work very easy to follow and execute. All of the Cancer Research tools are also very helpful in keeping things organised. Also, because the team were usually very quick to get back to me, the overall feeling was organised and efficient.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • The company and my colleagues really invested into my learning and developing From career modules online to a training day in London, I really felt that Cancer Research was taking my development seriously. In general, I felt like my learning was a big priority for my manager and the rest of the team, which I really appreciated.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Flexi Time

    Subsidised Canteen

    National Travel

    Working from home

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I would definitely work for Cancer Research again if the opportunity arose. Everyone is so friendly and welcoming, and I really felt the benefit of having a company invest into your own development as an employee and an individual. In general, the work that CRUK does is a great incentive to work for the organisation again, especially as I've now seen firsthand the hard work that goes into what the charity achieves.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • As all the interns worked in different regions, we did not have the usual social scene. However, we had a Whatsapp group which we chatted on pretty much everyday, and that was another great way to get advise and support. We also created a newsletter together every week, which created a good team atmosphere.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • I work from home in Bristol but could have worked anywhere in the region. Whilst where I live is expensive, it was my own choice and has nothing to do with getting the job with CRUK.

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Great!

    5/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Yes definitely. Cancer Research really encourages us to get involved as much as possible, and provides opportunities to do so. For example, although we worked from home I was always invited to the team meetings, and there were also online career-development workshops. Because of the flexible hours, I could also take the time to have another job and do activities like art and volunteering easily.
