Asset Consultancy Intern Review

I really enjoyed the environment I was in at the Bath office. The team was very welcoming, and there were a few other interns on at the same time as me, which meant I wasn't alone as a newbie in the building. The job itself was rewarding, and I also got to travel to site a few times, which was a nice change of scene.

As an intern I was expecting to just get given odd jobs here and there, but this was not the case at all. I was given important pieces of work, with deadlines, that would actually get sent out to clients right from the off. This made me feel like a valued member of the team right from day one.

I was sitting right next to the whole team, with all of them willing to answer questions whenever I asked, so I never felt lost. My line manager especially kept me updated on everything that was going on, so that I was always in the loop and on top of things.

How busy I was varied from day to day. Sometimes I had tasks piling up, and felt under a bit of pressure to get them done, but also there were days where things did not take as long as expected, and I was able to have some quieter afternoons. Overall, it was nicely balanced.

All the work I did was checked before going out to clients, but when doing a job, even though I knew I could ask for help at any time, I felt responsible for getting the job done, and did not require somebody holding my hand. It is a little like getting chucked in at the deep end at first, but by the end, I felt like part of the team.

I learnt a lot without realising it for a lot of the job. I developed a lot of skills with new software and old software, and got a real feel as to what it was like to work as part of a team. A lot of university work is done alone, and so working with people is such an important skill to develop during opportunities like on a placement.

The atmosphere varied from day to day, but on a whole it was very chilled out and calm with plenty of banter floating around. Every now and then when big deadlines were close, the office would tense up a bit, but equally that would be followed by a relaxed period once the pressure had blown over.

It was organised very well. It only took one morning to get introduced and get settled in, and then there were jobs ready for me to start working on from the off. Events for the interns were set up throughout the summer, and I felt very well looked after, and even miss the team now.

Every member of the team took time to run me through things and develop me as much as possible. They made it possible for me to go to as many site visits as they could, even if it meant going out of their way. I felt very well looked after.

Bath is an expensive place to live, but socialising costs nothing if you do it right. Bath is such a beautiful city, and it is also quite small, which means that you are never far away from having some fun. The office is also located really close to the centre of town, and so it is possible to pop into town for lunch if you want.

Bath has two universities in it, so while it probably is not referred to as a student city, it certainly ticks the boxes of a student city. Also, Bristol is only a ten minute train journey away, and so you are never far from a party of good night out.
