    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I thoroughly enjoyed the internship and would happily work for the company again. Everyone was very welcoming and friendly and never once made me feel out of place. The support from the managers was excellent and they really helped my development towards being an engineer. The social aspect over the summer months was also very good.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • As an intern in many companies you can feel a bit useless and not needed but at Buro Happold I never felt like this. This was due mainly to the fact of the work load I received which showed that not only did my colleagues and managers value me they also trusted in my ability to complete the work.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My line manager was excellent and supported me a huge amount through the internship. She always had a work load for me so that I wasn't doing nothing and made sure that she was teaching me new things, namely dynamo coding which I hadn't even seen before, with her guidance I gained good insight into it.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I was fairly busy every day but there could be down times of work just after issuing or when the work would of been out my capabilities without a lot of guidance which isn't always possible to get when you are in a busy office environment and everyone has dwadlines.

    4/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • During the placement I was giving a good amount of responsibility pretty much straight away which I really respected as it showed that there was already a level of trust between me and the managers and my capabilities. Helped with a number of important issuing dates which if done wrong would have caused big issues.

    4/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Most of my time was spent on Revit which I do not use that much during my degree. The area that is very useful is the deeper knowledge in to building services and how to map them into a building, which will be invaluable knowledge for my final year of my degree

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Socially the office was really fun, everyone got along really well and it was never boring. Over the summer there are a lot of social events like BBQs and trips to the park with the young engineers forum which were a great opportunity to meet new people and generally have a good time

    4/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The work placement was set up very well and I personally didn't feel like I had any issues. Though I do know other interns had problems with the line manager they were allocated, with one leaving straight away leaving an intern without a line manager. Also some line managers at times were too busy to provide any support

    4/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • The company definitely invested in my development of my skills and this is mainly from the teaching of dynamo, a completely new thing to me as I had never coded before. My line manager took a keen interest in training me up in dynamo to better my employability as a graduate engineer

    4/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Subsidised Canteen

    Sports and Social Club

    Company Parties/Events

    3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Future employment prospects with the company are very appealing. I would love to be able to go back and work there as a graduate and I have already given my application. I could see my development as an engineer making great progress at this company and really improving my abilities

    3/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • All the interns got along really well and ate lunch with each other every day. We also had drinks after work quite a lot and went to all the social events that took place over the summer. This made the internship really enjoyable and one of the highlights of my time there

    5/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • As the internship was in London it's always going to be expensive. Food and drink places surrounding the office in fitzrovia area are all very expensive when not used to London prices. I was able to travel from my parents home just outside of London so this negated the need for rent, but travel was still around £250 a month.

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • The bars and pubs surrounding the offices were always very busy and there was always a very good atmosphere in the area. There was also a very small club just round the corner from the bar that was a popular destination for the workers after other social events. Though the busyness could be put down to the good summer weather

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There were a lot of opportunities for activities outside of work. There was multiple sports teams and sporting events that we were able to take part in and through the young engineers forum there were events like surfing trips and camping trips but these weren't during the time that I was there
