    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I thoroughly enjoyed spending the summer with Handelsbanken, I felt apart of the company and was sad to leave at the end. The experience was invaluable in gaining insight into the Banking industry and I had the opportunity to see a vast range of departments such as Individual banking, Corporate Banking, Wealth Management and Head office roles within the company. I would highly recommend students aspiring a career in Banking to seek to complete an Internship ay Handelsbanken.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Everyone that I met during my internship was friendly, helpful and made me feel comfortable to ask questions which were always welcomed by patient answers. Throughout the internship we also had the opportunity to collaborate with other Interns which was also a positive experience

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Support and guidance by management were continually provided throughout the experience. Human resources were very helpful in answering any queries the interns may have had. Interns were split into Clusters and assigned 'Graduate Mentors' to guide and support us through the process. Additionally, within each branch, Interns were placed with a 'Branch Mentor', who had completed the Internship program before. My branch mentor was pivotal to my enjoyment of the process, involving me as much as possible and giving me responsibilities to make my time at Handelsbanken as meaningful as possible.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • At the beginning of the Internship programme we were given an 8-week outline of the topics each week, we should cover, including tasks set by HR such as various projects, presentations, training modules and glossaries to complete. However, this was only a brief guideline and the daily activities varied depending on how busy other colleges were and if there was available time to be shown new things. However, I kept myself busy throughout the Internship and spent quieter days completing work set by HR.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • During my Internship, I was given appropriate responsibility increasing with the knowledge I gained throughout the experience. I was placed responsible for contacting customers and completing real tasks which I thoroughly enjoyed as I felt as if I was contributing to the team and gave me insight into the day to day activities of banking.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • The skills developed and training received has assisted me in my final year of University as I have been able to see the real-world application of some of the theory taught at University. It has even increased my focus after cementing my career aspirations within Banking and will be a motivating factor to my degree attainment.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The atmosphere in my office was both supportive and friendly, although the majority of the team were of an older demographic which took some getting used to coming from a University setting. However, by the end of the experience, I was comfortable with them all and built rapport with them all and felt apart of the team.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The organisation of the Internship was very well organised, the 8 weeks comprised of getting full exposure to roles within the Branch. An outline of the programme was established right from the start which allowed us to plan our weeks ahead. The Internship also included 3 days at the regional head office where we got to meet and speak to individuals in differing roles.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • All interns were required to complete several training modules during the first week of the Internship. The knowledge acquired not only was beneficial during the Internship but also applicable to the wider industry. It was clear that throughout the process, Handelsbanken valued it's Interns and invested in us with the potential of us returning after Graduation. Additionally, the Internship included employability workshops e.g. Improving CV and Interview skills which beneficial to our personal development.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • 4/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Future prospects within Handelsbanken are very appealing, from the start of the Internship they emphasized the possibility of returning after Graduation if it was our interest in doing so. Throughout, they made us feel like valued team members and allowed us to see our potential place within Handelsbanken. However, the do not offer a formal graduate scheme and hire on a permanent basis depending on vacancies. Personally, I see the probability of me returning to Handelsbanken at a future point very likely and aspiration of my own.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Through the experience, the interns met with each other on numerous occasions allowing us to build rapport and friendships allowing for a good social scene among placement students. However, within each branch, there was only usually one single Intern so the day-to-day social scene was different and not so enjoyable for all if concerned about socializing with similar age colleagues.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Fortunately, I was able to work for a Branch in my home city so I had minimal living and socializing costs.

    5/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Again, as I was in my local home town I had the luxury of nightlife I was familiar with.

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Personally, there were limited opportunities for me to get involved in activities outside of work, however, other interns' experiences varied depending on their branch in which they were placed.
