    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I thoroughly enjoyed the internship and felt that the work I was doing was significant and meaningful, and that I contributed to the team around (who were supportive throughout). The project I was placed on was interesting and consequently let me develop skills that I know will be useful in the future when I join the company’s grad scheme.

    5/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • My colleagues expressly mentioned how much of a value I was to the team, even in menial tasks such as taking minutes at meeting (which, despite the stereotype, was actually an important task). I managed to help my team at an important time on an internal project through helping rethink the consultancy path, whilst also collaborating with another member of the team to create a customer journey for a budding project, which made me feel valued throughout.

    4/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Though I sometimes had to learn through trial and error, whenever I had a question my team were happy to help and answer questions (even when my timing wasn’t ideal!). Though I might have wanted more regular feedback from my project manager, I think this was probably more my own fault than that of the manager.

    4/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I was busy throughout the internship but this was important in learning how to manage time and prioritise tasks. I would have like to have finished the tasks that I started by the end of the internship, and there were a few instances when I had to take work home, however the work load was not more than I could handle.

    3/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • Inevitably there’s limited responsibility that you can give to an intern, however I felt like I was entrusted with important tasks, including presenting on various pieces of work I’d done or parts of the business that I’d been working in, often to important audiences (e.g. partners, visitors to the offices, etc).

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Certainly the advanced i made in my Microsoft office skills (PowerPoint and excel particularly) have been useful in changing my approach to university work in terms of how I use the software for group projects (e.g. presentations for economics). My experience and the advances I made in minute taking has also been very useful for university lectures too, where the pace can often be difficult to keep up with. Being able to more aptly discern what information is important or not is a particular skill that has come in useful. The compliance training we received during the internship will also inevitably be useful when I join the graduate scheme!

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Positive. Hot-desking and standing desks ensure that one doesn’t feel tied to their desk (even if it is sometimes frustrating always carrying a bag with you!) and the offices were comfortably furnished with plenty of natural light, which I consider especially important. The office was fairly quiet despite call chatter so it was easy to work in. Most people had headphones in (quite a good ‘do not disturb’ indication!). People were often happy to help with quick questions and if longer chats were needed, there are plenty of meeting rooms available throughout the buildings.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • There was a clear and educative programme set up for the internship, allowing for personal development but also ensuring the business found value in its inters. There was a clear structure to the programme with lots of socials to make sure that the interns were well acquainted and the teams had organised work ahead of my arrival to ensure I had meaningful things to work on. The application system was flawless, although I would’ve liked an answer as to whether or not I would get an offer earlier before the internship!

    5/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Purely by the nature of the job, I had to learn new skills. Deloitte was good at offering extra help in learning how to use programmes (e.g. ‘ story- boarding’ workshop for PowerPoint). Some skills can’t be taught however, and require judgement rather than lessons, and I think the firm was good at putting home in situations where the environment I was in would help me learn (e.g. how to steer a meeting towards your agenda to achieve your desired outcome). These business practices lessons are certainly something I’ll cherish in the future.

    4/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Subsidised Canteen

    Sports and Social Club

    Company Parties/Events

    3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • There’s most roles than you can ever think of with Deloitte, and I was lucky enough to get the job i wanted with them in my desired service line. There’s a clearly defined career path ahead of me and I hope that will help shape my career in the future.

    5/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Whilst I was the only intern on my team, there were plenty of opportunities to socialise with other interns through events and socials after work as well as other times when teams might come together to work on projects or explore new skills. Day to day I’d be less involved with other interns, but this helped me sculpt my own path so I didn’t consider this an issue.

    5/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Luckily I was able to live with my siblings during the internship so I didn’t have to pay rent, which is a huge proportion of income in London for an intern. Whilst food was expensive around the office, I managed to get around this by bringing my own lunches. Overall I didn’t find this to be too much of an issue, particularly considering the socials were payed for by Deloitte!

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Other than post work drinks I didn’t go out to any nights during my time, so I can’t really comment! The pubs and bars around the office were good though, as one would expect in central london.

    2/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Deloitte has a lot of out of work societies, particularly centred around sports and volunteering, albeit I bad a busy schedule during my time at Deloitte, and wasn’t able to participate.
