    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • The entire experiment was fantastic. I felt like a valued team member and that the firm had a genuine investment in me succeeding. It was a pleasure coming to work everyday and the only bad part was having to leave after the 9 weeks. I had initially worried that the work may be too tough or too tedious, but this worry was misplaced, the work was exciting, valuable and I received great support from colleagues.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I felt extremely valued, my input was fed directly to senior members of the team. I felt able to express my opinions and insights, where appropriate, with no backlash and without being dismissed. All members of the team were engaging and I felt able to discuss my internship goals with members of the team.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I was given constant feedback, help and guidance by management. This included day-to-day advice, help with tasks and longer term support for my career goals. All staff were approachable and keen to offer help wherever possible, and importantly willing to share their own experiences and insights about the industry and their own careers.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • In general, I felt the level of work was in-line with what I expected. I did not feel stressed by the work and even felt I had further capacity to take on more projects. Other team members were happy to assign additional tasks where they could. In some instances, when the team was busy, initiative was required when it came to coming up with my own tasks.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I truly felt I was given the maximum amount of responsibility possible under regulatory constraints. I had exposure to several live deals and when I was in a more flow-focussed role, I was allowed to handle RFQs under supervision. I was also given the opportunity to produce product marketing information that was sent direct to clients.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • As I am studying BSc Finance, I found the internship and my degree programme have had a two way relationship. I have learnt many things in an academic context that I was able to apply to my work (e.g. statistical methods, asset pricing, simulations). Equally I have taken many lessons from my work back to the classroom, e.g. an understanding of market structure/participants, derivatives pricing, cash flow forecasting and Excel skills.

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The atmosphere was very positive in the office. Staff had a genuine interest and passion for their work as well as for working together. There was a strong sense of teamwork, both within teams and across teams. This positive work culture made the office feel like one happy family of people with a shared desire to do a great job.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Deutsche Bank was well prepared for the internship. Desk managers were well briefed on the interns, what they should assist interns with and how the internship was structured. I never felt managers expected too much (or too little) from interns and had an appreciation of how the internship fed into the graduate scheme and beyond.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Deutsche Bank provided a comprehensive 1 week training programme for all interns which covered a good range of personal and technical training. The training programme was well thought through and was a genuine add-on to the programme. It did not feel like an unnecessary burden and was a good chance to ease everyone’s nerves going into the programme.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Deutsche Bank is a fantastic employer and a truly global firm. I would be thrilled to start and build my career there. The firm has a global reach and given the scope of the firms activities there is definitely something for everyone, regardless of your background. Given positive staff morale I believe it is also a caring employer.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • There was a good atmosphere among interns. We all tried to help each other out where we could and teach things to each other. On several occasions other interns introduced me to their teams and this was reciprocated. I have stayed in touch with several interns since the programme ended and look forward to seeing them next year.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • One major drawback of London is the cost of living. This is somewhat inevitable and is the trade off for living in a global economic and cultural hub. Deutsche Bank recognised this and the compensation was enough to offset this and allow for a comfortable stay in London and the opportunity to explore the city.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Of course being London the nightlife is a big positive. The office was only a 10 minute journey to either the West End or more hipster Shoreditch areas of London. There were also several bars, clubs, restaurants, theatres, cinemas and other activity places all within walking distance of the office.

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There were plenty of opportunities to get involved with activities outside of work. Again being London there were plenty of social activities and membership clubs to get involved with. There are plenty of volunteering schemes as well as activity clubs. There was never a shortage of things to get involved in, regardless of your hobbies.
