    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • Amazing placement with a lot of interesting work and people. My team culture was great and I feel I have so much to learn and people around me who I can learn from. In terms of areas of development I find that I am not limited and if I want to explore an area, say SQL or python/machine learning there is someone within the team that is working on such projects and is able to show me the sort of work I could be working on as a graduate which was amazing.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • The opinion of interns matter and I feel my inputs have been valued by the team and implemented. Also, colleagues are very friendly and occasional socials are organised throughout the internship which shows the amazing culture that the team has to offer. I feel I have made friends who can support me when I return as a graduate.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My manager was able to provide feedback on the goals and targets but also able to point me in the right direction if I ever needed support or learn a new skill. The structure is very flat and you get to see you manager/senior manager/director and even partner every day because you are all seated in the same office floor!

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • It was intense 4 weeks with a lot of classroom/online training to complete but were all useful and some great fun! I did appreciate the ML introduction and python training which I did not get to learn at university and it has then inspired me to find out more training on these in my free time.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • Great responsibility, I was there to code in VBA, which I have learnt in my training, and write a script to automate the dashboard data capture of the major product in our department. I feel that I have been given enough responsibility to work alone while having a lot of places to seek help - the people beside me!

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I have gained first-hand experience in VBA, learnt python and advanced Excel, also had a great introduction to ML which really inspired me to dive deeper into the world of technology and beyond. At university, I started to look out for areas to develop these skills further and has impacted how I approach tasks at university with excel.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Great atmosphere, everyone was there to help and friendly. Great social as we have football and drink sessions every week which make it a great way to relax after work. The hours are good which means you are on your way home no later than 6pm which can be a dream working at some companies...

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The internship was very well organised and we have been told that it has been undergoing planning for over 4 months to ensure we get the perfect 4 weeks. Thank you guys! The training received in the short 4 weeks were adequate and has a great variety, clearly very well thought about during the planning stage.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • The company invest in intern/graduate a lot. Depend on your department you can do ACA/CFA/CIMA and if in tech, the google/microsoft/amazon certifications which take your skills and career to the next level. I feel that the company not only sponsor such exams but also provide study leave that genuinely shows the commitment of the firm to invest in its people.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Flexi Time

    Subsidised Canteen

    Subsidised/Company Gym

    Company Parties/Events

    Staff Sales/Staff Shop

    Above 25 days holiday

    Working from home

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Great! I have received my graduate offer to return after graduation this year. Most interns will be offered once the placement/internship is completed because KPMG is rigorously expanding and the best minds need to be kept! The interns will face the same interview and selection process as graduates so once you are in and get the taste you are pretty much set for full time.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Great social, football, drinks and games over the 4 weeks. Every day the graduates from the team will eat together on the grass outside to get some sun and it is amazing how people are so close together coming from diverse backgrounds and cultures. I have participated in drinks/football and network sessions.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Cheaper than Kensington/Gloucester Road that I use to live, and there are plenty of new flats near Canary Wharf which is a nice area to live in. The prices of food in the company is subsidised and even cheaper than the food in my university canteen with student price! KPMG also offers lunch allowance every day to give you a free sandwich or part of your meal.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Great nightlife, a lot of drinks and networking. You can experience the nightlife of canary wharf first hand and even outside it, there are plenty of restaurants and bars. The isle of dog is just a short walk away and many choose to live there so many house parties !!

    5/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Volunteering days, social visits, and more but I did not experience it due to the fact that I was only there for 4 weeks. But I do see graduates being able to sign up to corporate responsibility days and you can spend your time helping your local charity and community.
