    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I enjoyed my internship thoroughly. I found that the work I was completing to be new, challenging but also interesting and relevant. I took in a lot of new information regarding the energy markets and feel more comfortable working in this field. I think the best part of the internship was the support from colleagues if I did not understand something straight away. They always pointed out helpful resources or explained the concept.

    5/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I was always valued by my colleagues. They were always respectful and feedback given from the work was always constructive. I felt I was included in their projects and overall goals they had in place.

    5/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Lots of guidance were given but some problems were left up to me on how to create a solution. I liked this approach as I was not just following a procedure all the time but had some independence in the way I created the solution.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • For most of the internship, I was busy with lots of work to do. However, I also had the flexibility to take on more work whenever I could which I liked. I think a lot of it is up to the person doing the internship, as there is opportunity to do more or different work if you would like to.

    4/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • The projects which I were working on would affect the traders and their outlook on the markets etc. So in this case, I was given quite significant amount of responsibility. However, I never felt that it was overwhelming as I could always verify some things if I was not completely sure.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • The main things I learnt about the futures markets, options pricing, LNG market, outlook on the energy market and the role of renewables in the grid. I think these things will be beneficial to me as I would like to pursue something in the energy/renewables field.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Friendly and collaborative. It is a high pressure work environment during some times of the day but this is expected of this position.

    5/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Well organised. Everyone is in charge of their own work environment and we get a sufficiently large desk for all of our belongings. The room is thoroughly cleaned every night as well. The kitchen is always kept clean as well.

    5/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • We had weekly lunch and learn session where we had external teachers/speakers or someone from another department share what they are doing to everyone. They were really insightful and showed the broad range of work being carried out at the company. So overall, lots of energy and time were invested in us during the internship.

    5/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Subsidised/Company Gym

    Company Parties/Events

    Travel loan

    4/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Highly appealing. Lots of opportunity and is related to the area I would like to work in. My colleagues were friendly and approachable so it was easy to discuss things with them regarding my work.

    3/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • We had two social events during our internship. They were both fun and enjoyable and was a opportunity to get to know our colleagues and other interns.

    5/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • I think it is generally accepted living in London is significantly more due to rent but there are also more things to do as well. However, all the interns did usually do something end of the week.

    4/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Good. Lots of bars, restaurants near by.

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Yes, there was a opportunity to volunteer outside for a cause of choice. At the beginning of the internship, we also had a mini marathon which was really fun and also a way to social and learn about colleagues.
