    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I really enjoyed it, I learnt so much about finance and investments. I worked in securitisation and Debt capital markets so got exposure to two different departments, further enhancing my learning. Everyone I worked with was really nice and made me feel welcome and was very helpful at explaining some of the more difficult concepts.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • My colleagues were very welcoming and made me feel like part of the team. They tried to give me interesting things to do and seemed likely they genuinely cared that I should try and see as much of what the teams did as possible (trying to talk me through as many ongoing deals as possible).

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • the HR team was really good at providing support and running events to help us get to know each other and to hear from other members of the business. They were always really quick to answer any questions. My managers were also very helpful, scheduling the odd 'check-in coffee' to see how I was doing and to make sure I was understanding what was going on.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I had lots to do, but very rarely so busy that it was overwhelming. I tended to get given lots of little tasks as they needed to explain everything to me so it was harder to have one project to do myself although I did do a couple of more 'project-like' tasks.

    5/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I assisted on a lot of things, however obviously everything was checked before being used. I created lots of powerpoints with analysis and graphs using data which were then used to send to clients. But obviously, as an intern there's a limit to how much actual responsibility you can have.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Now that I am back at university, I am already noticing how the knowledge I gained about finance will help me with my modules this year. Having real experience helps contextualise what you are learning and definitely makes it easier. Also, I learnt so much about networking which is arguably one of the most important and most transferable skills you can gain.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • At times it could be stressful, but in general it was a hard-working but friendly environment and I found all staff really friendly and respectful towards the interns - willing to answer any questions and talk things through whenever they had a free moment. It was very much a team environment in the desks I was on.

    3/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • We had so many internship events organised that were really useful for making friends, networking and getting to know more about the business and how it operated. they also organised some women in banking events that were really interesting and the rotations were set up really well, allowing us to try two different desks.

    5/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • A lot of time was given to the interns, with many talks and learning events organised to help us learn more about the bank and finance. There was also a learning portal online covering basic finance knowledge. Current employees also gave up a lot of time to teach us about what they work on.

    5/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Above 25 days holiday

    3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • very appealing. it is well paid, the employees are nice and respectful, the work is interesting and it is a good grad programme to start a career with. the markets programme has 4 rotations so you can start by trying multiple teams before committing to one - this happens over 4 months though so doesn't delay starting your career too much.

    5/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • yes, every Friday consisted of after work drinks amongst the other interns, grads and other employees. we also had lots of events organised for socialising in order to make friends and get to know people such as networking drinks or even just the organised talks with gathered us all together.

    5/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • it was in London so the cost of living and socialising is the highest in the UK with rents really high and the price of drinks in the centre was ridiculous. However, the compensation does account for this and I managed to save some of my salary from the internship to help with my final year uni costs.

    1/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • in London the nightlife is obviously really good. there are unlimited options for things to do at night and around the office with bars and restaurants everywhere. obviously this is quite expensive but there are so many options so there will definitely b e something f or every one to enjoy.

    5/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • unfortunately, as the working hours were quite long it was hard to get involved in activities outside of work as I was normally quite tired by thee time I finished and wanted to go home for dinner. the most common activities were just going for drinks or dinner, however I do foresee that if you were there permanently it'd be easier to get involved in more activities
