    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • The summer internship programme was great experience to build my network and knowledge in finance. I had a pleasure to working on various projects and applying my knowledge from university studies. Often the work could get demanding and challenging; however, this helped to develop and strengthen my work ethic in a professional working environment.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • During the summer internship programme, I had an opportunity to collaborate with various colleagues across different teams. Based on this experience, I am very pleased to say that everyone who I worked with was willing to support, which made me feel valued. Whether I interacted with colleagues in a professional or social manner, they have always been friendly.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I learned a lot from my manager. I truly look forward to the point in time in future when I am as professional as my manager. He has strong leadership skills, which was a great support as he guided me throughout the project and provided me insights into how to manage my time effectively.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I would say depends on the day. Surely, I don’t recall a day when I was bored because there was always something to learn or to do. It did get super busy from time to time when I had approaching deadlines, which was expected. But generally, I’d say there was a good balance.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • As I mentioned earlier, I had some projects during this summer internship programme and I had a responsibility to meet weekly deadlines. Also, in such a fast paced work environment, it was great experience to be responsible for managing my time. Having said this, to improve this further I could have been given a task to organised a social event to bring the team together.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • As an individual who is interested to pursue a career in finance, I am glad to say this placement has provided skills for life! What I learned during this programme will not assist in my degree studies purely because I have already graduated; however, it will certainly be useful in my future career.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The general atmosphere in the office was friendly. On many occasions, I had coffee and lunch breaks with colleagues, and this was an important aspect in the summer internship because it allowed to build relationships with co workers in a social manner. Everyone seemed to be very professional in work and very social on non-work relationships.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The summer internship programme was organised in an effective manner. It started with comprehensive training sessions which were very useful to refer to throughout the placement. Then, I had multiple projects to work on, starting from relatively easier one then progressing to more challenging ones. Therefore, I think the structure of the placement was reasonable.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • As I mentioned, in the first week I had various training sessions which was very useful and insightful. I felt like the company has made a huge investment on my professional development because we even had external trainees. These sessions developed both technical knowledge and soft skills such as communication and teamwork. One thing I would suggest to improve the training would be to provide a session on how to use Bloomberg.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • There were quite many students on the same summer internship programme and we all managed to become good friends by the end of the placement. We all are from different backgrounds and it is interesting to learn more about their culture and to work with them on a similar/same projects because everyone thinks differently.

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Yes, definitely I would agree with this statement that there was so much to do after work and in the weekends. I used to take day trips in weekends and this was a great was to spend my time in nature and relax after hard work during weekdays. Similarly, there were so much to do after work too! My favourite activity was to go for a short walk in evenings to explore the city.
