    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • A very good opportunity and exposure for me to utilise new emerging technologies such as cloud computing and Azure DevOps tools that modernise the company's business. A fantastic agile team with great teamwork and support for each other allowing me to strengthen my soft skills and contribute to my fullest potential.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • The BP Mulesoft Centre for Enablement team was very supportive and provided their full guidance in building my technical competence in Python programming and Azure DevOps skills as well as my soft skills by providing me opportunities to take on presentation tasks in sprint meetings. The team involved me in many project tasks that allowed me to fully utilised my skill sets and feel like I am part of the team.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My line manager was very helpful in onboarding me into the internship programme and provided me with all the equipment I need to carry out my DevOps tasks. Very helpful and supportive throughout and my contributions were well recognised. My manager would have weekly catchup meetings with me to ensure that my internship experience was smooth.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Relatively balanced, a good balance between meetings, team discussions, platform administration works and technical programming works. Work is always a 8am to 4pm job and there's no need of overtime. The team is flexible and working hours are adjusted to how close we are to a software release which gets much busier.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • Even as an intern, I was given resposibilities and tasks equal to graduates and employees at BP. There is high involvement in team projects and your ideas and opinions matter in the team. Worked as a DevOps engineer within the team and given responsibilities to oversee and facilitate developer operations.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Working as a DevOps engineer, I was heavily involved in programming automation scripts in Python which is a fantastic skill I have honed that can be utilised in a lot of university courseworks related to data science and artificial intelligence. I have developed interpersonal and team player skills that are essential to working effectively and efficiently in teams for future group works in both my university and my future career.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The office is open spaced and large that induce collaboration and teamwork between groups of people. There is a lot of freedom to communicate with teammates and sometimes the atmosphere can be very lively with jokes thrown here and there. There are flipcharts and whiteboards around that help facilitate discussions. There are also plenty of bookable meeting rooms to have a more formal discussion with very good tech equipment such as online call conference systems and HDMI TVs.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Very well set up. There was a formal introduction to the company with a job proforma prior to the internship programme that gave me a good idea of what I was going to do. The induction day was well organised with a lot of inspirational talks from senior BP employees. The overall internship programme was fast paced with a great Agile team that always involve me in project works that are stimulating and challenging but fun. Every two weeks, we will have software releases that involve me to present a demo of workable software to the team.

The team and especially my manager have been fully supportive and made sure that I was performing well in the team and I was in good shape in every aspect.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • BP is going through a digital transformation with their business and there are plenty of opportunities for people like me who do software to fit the job scope of the company's demands in DevOps specialist, cloud operations, software development and many more. With a great international platform like BP, career development is fantastic in this company.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Yes, BP has been quite a talk in University College London. There showed up in some of our university career fairs and BP has often come up in some of my conversation with friends especially when it comes to the career opportunities there. I have also seen career opportunities advertisements on social media such as Facebook and Instagram.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • My office is based in ICBT, Sunbury, London and so the cost of living especially living in a city like London is not the best. Rent is expensive in London and overall expenses such as groceries and transport are a bit expensive. There is a good social environment in London with plenty of pubs and entertainment centres.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • 3/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There were plenty of activities such as volunteering works in primary schools and community centres, poster innovation showcase where I get to create my poster of my project and present it in the main building for show and tell and other events like social gatherings and sports competitions. There are plenty of social clubs to join each of which provide a range of social activities outside of work.
