    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I didn't feel as if I was given enough substantial work. For the first 4 weeks I was told to watch videos on how to use basic software and any skills I might like to improve. I would have preferred to have work more closely related to my role in Risk.

    2/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • They were all keen to help me settle in and answer any questions I had. However I noticed that they would leave me to myself more often than I would have liked during the internship. That being said, some really went out of their way to help me with work.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I knew support was available, but only if I specifically asked for it, which is the way it should be. However I did notice that a lot of the time questions I had were unable to be answered as a lot of the time I was told to make my own choices regarding some tasks, even when I was struggling.

    3/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Majority of my days on the internship I was bored, staring at a screen. It was incredibly hard to fid stuff myself to do. I would have preferred to be offered more tasks. This often made me demotivated and as a result as I was less keen to try my hardest as so much less was required of me.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • Not really much in terms of other people. But in terms of the tasks given to me, I had complete control over most aspects in tasks given to me apart from the main source of data. So in terms of that a nice amount of responsibility where I felt comfortable.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • The Internship certainly helped with my individual skills such as self teaching and gaining confidence. This would be especially helpful in my course where self teaching is such a large aspect of the course material. The training I received I don't believe will help me with my degree studies as it was fairly basic stuff.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • There was a relaxed atmosphere in the office. Everything from dress code, to flexible working and general nice level there was a nice feeling to sitting at the office, whether it be Monday or Friday. Regular weekly activities were put on to allow colleagues a break from work which certainly boosted productivity.

    3/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • I do not feel there was a plan in place for me, once in my department. Beforehand there seemed to be a good structure set up and well don't to emerging talent for that. But when I actually set up in my department there was no structure at all and I was very confused, especially during the first month.

    2/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Not much at all. There was no real interest from anyone, apart from myself, in improving myself and becoming more employable. So really to a very small extent if any as I was given very basic tasks which did not have great benefits to the individual doing them, but more to the company.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Subsidised Canteen

    National Travel

    Working from home

    3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • The company would be a nice place to work, providing its within a department I would like to work. They have many graduate schemes available to interns and there seems to be many opportunities for promotion and development. Also the company have significantly invested in me financially and so this automatically makes me lean towards them as goodwill.

    4/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Yes. All interns were placed in accommodation where we all mixed together for the most part. Furthermore other graduates and Industrial placements were here as well which further helped this social scene. I rarely had, if any out of work social interaction with permanent colleagues, probably due to age difference.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • My accommodation was paid for, however socialising with other interns was particularly expensive, mainly due to Edinburgh being an expensive city. Whilst places were still affordable it was sometimes hard to ignore some extortionate costs around the city. Food and drink, when not prepared yourself was especially expensive and this was sometimes hard to avoid due to occasional long working days.

    2/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • The nightlife area was vibrant and interesting in Edinburgh. As mentioned before though, quite expensive and so it did limit our abilities to explore all the nightlife as most of us were still students. However the fringe festival was a nice little addition to our internship where we got to see great shows most nights.

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Not really at all no.
