The Role

Role Description

I was a research intern in emerging markets division in macroeconomics

1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?

I learned a lot about not only the company but also economics and finance in general. I got opportunities to shadow various people in the company and got quite a lot of mentorship. The job was stressful and demanding with long hours and distorted life work balance that is typical in such places.

2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?

I felt that my comments were listened to and that everyone gave me space to form my own opinions while still providing guidance and mentorship. My work was useful for the team and the company as a whole and I was given surprisingly lot of responsibility for an intern which I appreciated

3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?

The extend of my mentorship depended on the current situation in the markets. If my managers had time they were willing to devote it to me, but at times of stress I mostly relayed on experience of younger colleagues: analysts and associates. Over all I think I got quite a lot of help.

4. How busy were you on a daily basis?

I was extremely busy from very early in the morning till later in the evening. There was always more to do, more to read and more to learn. I could ask for more tasks from my team or spend time on learning from other teams and divisions I was never bored

5/10

5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?

I was surprised at how much responsibility I was given. I was doing tasks that the analysts would do if I was not there which boosted my confidence and allowed me to understand better how it would be to work there full time. Sometimes the pressure was quite big because of that

9/10

6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?

I am not from economic nor finance background so I had to learn everything on the job which meant that my learning curve was almost vertical. Everyone in my team took time to help in expanding my skills and shared their knowledge. The teaching was invaluable and I could not learn more anywhere else

The Organisation

7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?

It was an atmosphere of collaboration, academic discussions at times but quite often we were under strain, rushing for time, trying to keep ahead of the curve. There were times when the stress was high but the team was used to it and functioned well in such a dynamic environment.

8/10

8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?

The internship was very well organised. We had diverse programme with events from HR and specific desks. We had time and sessions for networking, learning about the job, company, desk-specifics, industry and general skills. It was long and intense but full of diverse events that could attract everyone. I really learned a lot.

10/10

9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?

I think that the company invested a lot in the development of the interns, mostly because the teams were invested in their interns but also there was a company wide approach that aimed to develop the future of the company and hence to develop the young talents which I greatly appreciated

10/10

10. What were the perks on your work placement?

  • Subsidised/Company Gym
  • Company Parties/Events
5/10

11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?

The future prospect within the organisations are very appealing. The job available are impressive and there are so many sections and so many future paths and careers that everyone who wants to work in a bank will find a place for them. The company is diverse and has many many sections to choose from

7/10

Social

12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?

5/10

13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?

5/10

14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?

5/10

15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?

There were opportunities but because of the hours it was really hard to get involved in anything. The days were long and during the weekends I mostly rested. The life and work balance was something that did not allow for lots of socialising after the work. But I guess this is a industry wide problem
