The Role
I enjoyed my work placement or internship. It was very insightful and enabled me to form a good view of the industry as a whole and as the firm. I learnt a huge amount of technical details as well as networking and building my network throughout the internship. Very enjoyable.
We were given significant support and guidance by our management and supervisors. We had a strong support network in place which included a manager, mentor and buddy, all of whom helped us out whenever we had issues or were in need of some help, guidance or any other pastoral care.
It is hard to say how busy I was on a daily basis given the fact that the days varied so significantly. Some days, when there was lots of work, I wold stay late due to being so busy, whereas at other times I was sometimes slightly lost for work.
We were given quite a lot of responsibility during the placement, more than i had expected for sure. This responsibility revolved around ensuring that we completed our set work within time and to the correct standard. Furthermore, much of the work was pretty important and therefore we were given lots of responsibility in their trust for us on that.
We did receive substantial training throughout the programme which was above and beyond what you would expect to learn at University. Whilst these lessons were very useful, apart from excel skills, they are unlikely to assist me massively in my degree. Nevertheless, they will definitely come useful in my future career, no matter which path i take.
The Company
General atmosphere was really pleasant in the office. We had recently moved into a brand new office and there was certainly an excited vibe. Everyone in the office is very friendly, approachable and willing to help you out with whatever you are working on. Overall great general atmosphere for sure.
The overall internship was very well organised. It was a perfect combination of desk work, project work, talks from senior and junior people in the firm and training. This meant that we were able to be exposed to senior people as well as more junior individuals who gave us frank views of the industry.
The firm invested in us to a great extent for our personal training and development. Firstly, we had specific skill training such as excel and other modelling techniques which was very useful for some specific jobs. Secondly, there was also significant investment in our social network which is equally important.
The Culture
There was a great social scene amongst both the fellow interns and the employees. Amongst the interns we would regularly go out for drinks and meals after work and in our free time. For socializing with employees, HR organised many socializing/networking events for us to speak to these people which were fun.
There were lots of opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work. These opportunities included Dragon boat racing which was organised by the firm and a great way to network with people you would not otherwise speak to. They also organised a larger office day out where we volunteered in the country.
