The Role
I really enjoyed my internship at Morgan Stanley. Before starting I spoke with my manager and discussed what areas I was interested in, and then I was placed in a team that dealt with these areas. The work was challenging but not too challenging. There were events ran by HR throughout the internship that including values workshops and financial planning workshops. These were really helpful for my life outside Morgan Stanley.
Before starting I thought that I wouldn't have much communication with my colleagues as I was only an intern, but when I started the whole team were so welcoming. Whenever I needed help, they were always there to offer it. I also was given a buddy who I met with every 2 weeks. In these catch-ups I was able to tell her how I was getting on and if I had any problems or questions about my work or anything else.
I was given enough support and guidance by my manager. Whenever I needed help or was stuck, my manager was there to give me hints and help to get over the issue. My manager was over powering either. He let me get on with my work but made me aware that he was there if I needed help. My manager was also very helpful whenever I had any questions about the firm as a whole.
My day to day timetable differed most days. So there were some days where I was extremely busy but some where I was not. I always was given work to complete and worked to deadlines which meant I was never sat doing nothing. As half of my team worked in New York, I did find that I was busier in the afternoons when they came online.
I was given a lot of responsibility during my internship. I was given my own project that I worked on and it was only my project so everything depended on me. I enjoyed this as I was able to take full control of the project and design and implement it the way I wanted to. I also took part in demos every 2 weeks. In these demos I got to present what I had achieved.
My skills developed a lot during my time at Morgan Stanley. I was given work that I had never touched before and programming languages that I had never used before. Using the Firm's resources I was able to watch training videos that taught me the basics of the programming language I was learning. I was also able to speak to other colleagues that were subject matter experts in the language so received the best training I could.
The Company
The atmosphere in the office was better than I expected. Everyone is very warm and welcoming and are willing to answer any question. Although you may sit at your desk all day, usually the teams around are very chatty and are willing to chat about anything. Everyone knows each other and you never feel lonely.
The internship was set up extremely well. The first week was an induction week where we got introduced to the other interns, learned the values of the Firm and also got to meet our managers. The second week was were we started working with our team. Throughout the internship, HR had planned many training workshops and social events. The training workshops were very useful as they taught us things that we may not have learnt in our teams, such as health and wellbeing and financial planning.
At the start we had to set goals that we wanted to meet by the end of the internship. We then had a mid term checkup and end of term review with our manager and HR who then discussed what goals had we set and if we'd met them and if not what we were planning to do to meet them. There were also a lot of opportunities given that allowed us to meet our goals.

The future employment prospects are very appealing with Morgan Stanley. I am in the technology department so the graduate job includes a 15 week training camp in London. This gives the chance to graduates to work in another city than they are usually use to. There is also the chance of internal mobility when you come back.
The Culture
Very good social scene. After a few weeks everyone had their own groups but we still had a Messenger chat that we all spoke in or asked questions in. There were social events at least once a month that we all took part in, some that were organised by the Firm and some that weren't.
I live in Glasgow so I stayed at home, but in general Glasgow is a relatively cheap place to live. There are many areas in Glasgow that provide student accommodation over the summer that people are able to stay in for a reduced price. There are many places that you can social all varying in price and it depends what you want to do.
Glasgow is a very bustling city and has many pubs and bars that are available made for everyone. There are a lot of pubs close to each other so you can jump between them which is good and get to see different atmospheres. There is a subway around Glasgow and there are many people that partake in a 'subcrawl'.
One of Morgan Stanley's core values is Giving Back. We were given multiple opportunities to volunteer out with work. One example is that I was given the opportunity to volunteer at a music festival in Glasgow. This was a really fun experience as I got the chance to volunteer but also got to experience the festival.
