    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I have enjoyed my internship at my desk and also the teach-ins, roundtable sessions and other sessions where I am able to be exposed to other teams and divisions.

    5/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I feel valued when my opinion, ideas and feedback were taken into consideration and was also given the opportunity to participate in decision making processes.

    5/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My manager and buddy were super helpful technically and also were very great in helping me to fit in and to address my concerns and questions comfortably.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • My project was very self targeted based and I had to set technical goals for myself although with guidance for my manager at the start. I am as busy as how much I set my own targets to be.

    5/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I think my project was a pretty important project as it starts the ball rolling in trying to implement a feature in the desktop application to all users.

    4/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • My degree is not CompSci centric so the skills that I have developed will not helped me in that sense. But it definitely enhanced my programming and analytical thinking skills which is valuable in my future career path.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Smaller team cultures and routines were team specific. But there was a firmwide culture where interns were very valued, that there were not stupid questions, that we are encouraged to go out and meet new people, and of course the most important part is that there was a relatively flat organisational structure in which interns are encouraged to seek advice from MDs or partners even from different divisions.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The human capital management did a good job in organising very insightful talks and sessions where interns were exposed to other divisions across the firms and also opportunities to get a more upclose and personal sessions with MDs and partners. My personal project was not particularly structured in terms of technical goals, but I appreciate the opportunity for me to explore and think analytically on how the product development should be paved.

    4/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • The human capital management did organise 6 hours of different training sessions depending on the different skillsets or programming language that you would require. Although they weren't very helpful because I personally think that you cannot cram all the knowledge into 6 hours, especially to those who have no experience at all. I think that the firm should subscribe into a better Udemy package for the interns where interns can access most of the Udemy courses available. Current package only includes business specifics and even that, the courses were not as helpful.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Flexi Time

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Prospects of future employment within Goldman Sachs London is promising for me by the looks of my mid-term review and final review. Generally, I think that there was a clear message from the human capital management that they have no specific headcount, in the sense that they would likely like to hire back all the interns if everybody did well. Division specific, I have an interest in a different team which currently has no interns, and I'm not sure how many headcounts they would have.

    5/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • I had a really good time with my new found friends that I have made over the course of my internship. Although Goldman Sachs did not organise many intern events as I've heard from many other companies, my friends and I did have a lot of fun organizing our own hangouts during the weekends.

    5/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • The cost of living in London is definitely more expensive if we're comparing with other cities in the United Kingdom. Although with the amount of pay that we are receiving from Goldman Sachs during the course of our internship, it is enough for us to live a decently comfortable social life.

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • London is a very great place with a very great night life especially on Fridays and during the weekends of course. Not sure about the immediate location of my office, but within a five kilometer radius there is definitely a decent amount of locations to go to for drinks after work.

    5/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Yes in the sense that there are many things to do in London especially during summer. No, because Goldman Sachs only organize intern socials during the first week and the last week of the internship as compared to other companies in which I have heard to have drinks session every week on Fridays.
