    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I really enjoyed the work I did during the summer. The culture at GS suits me well and I liked being able to work with like-minded people. Occasionally I needed a bit more guidance than I was given. Overall I connected well with the colleagues in my team and gained lots of new skills.

    4/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I was given a specific long term project to work on over the summer, which full-time employees would not have been able to do due to their other working commitments. My colleagues made it clear that the infrastructure I build would be of great use for them in future analysis.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Initially I was given a lot of support and guidance, so I knew what to do and knew that I could ask for help. However, partway through I felt that I needed more guidance but that my manager and supervisors were too busy to be able to help me enough. In the later weeks this improved as my colleagues became more involved in my project.

    4/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Generally the workload was good, but there were a couple of weeks where I felt a bit bored and like I didn't have enough supervision to help me direct my work. Towards the end the workload increased dramatically as I neared my project deadline, which meant I had 4 late nights in the office in a row.

    4/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given almost all the responsibility over my project, though I was also given guidance which meant it didn't weigh too heavily on me. I was also put in charge of one of the weekly tasks which had to be completed by my team, and it was nice to have the responsibility for that.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • During my internship I learned how to use Python. I had zero prior coding experience but now I am relatively proficient in using the language for data management, analysis and making charts. I am sure that these skills will be of great use in my MPhil next year and also in my future career.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The atmosphere in my office reflected that my colleagues are hard-working, ambitious people. However, they were also really friendly people who were happy to offer advice. They understood the importance of taking breaks for coffee and for lunch, which I think is so important. It is unhealthy to always eat lunch at your desk!

    4/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The internship was very well organised. I was also able to start a week late given that I had my graduation during the first week of the programme. The only problem was I wasn't given very much guidance with regards to my final presentation at the end of the project.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • We were given training in all the relevant IT systems and programs so that we would be able to complete our work. In my team, most of the knowledge and understanding required came from my degree, so I wasn't taught much more in that respect. However, the team invested in my learning of Python which I think will be very useful in future

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Subsidised/Company Gym

    Healthcare/Dental

    3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • The feedback given to me during my internship was positive overall. My team seemed to be impressed with my work, so I am hopeful of being offered a full time position. However, this is dependent on there being a vacancy within the team for me - so I guess we will see!

    4/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • I didn't meet a huge number of other interns. In comparison to other divisions, the interaction between interns was relatively small. I think this is because we were better integrated into our teams, so we bonded with them instead of fellow interns. I really liked the colleagues in my team and got on well with them.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • London is always expensive... I chose to live 10 minutes walk from the office which meant my rent was expensive. However, it meant I had more time before and after work to do things like go to the gym and meet friends. I also was trying to save as much money as possible from my internship so I didn't spend much on socialising anyway.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • There are lots of pubs and bars in the City where people go after work, particularly at the end of the week. I think there are also a few clubs e.g. Fabric in the area. However I didn't go out that much because I like my sleep, but there were lots of options if I had wanted to.

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • The main thing to join outside of work was the gym. We had to pay to join but it was much cheaper than other gyms in the area, and had several perks e.g. towels, showers with shampoo etc, hair dryers and straighteners, gym kit to wear in the gym, etc.
