    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I really enjoyed my internship. We were given an initial 3-day training with interns from all the various business lines. This was a great way to network and get to learn a bit about the other careers available at Aon. During my internship I found that the work that I did really mattered, and I was given a lot of responsibility.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I worked in the general insurance department at Aon. This is a fairly small department and so I found that everyone quite quickly knew who you were, and it was very easy to ask anyone questions. It also felt like I could ask anyone in my department questions about anything regardless of how silly they were.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I was innitially given a lot of support with an initial catchup with my supervisor on my first day in the office. Over time I had less contact with her however this I believe was more so that I could be more independent and learn more about what everyone else does at the firm.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • It very much varied. I started and ended my internship really busy. I found that in the middle of my internship I was looking for extra things to do however. They did also set a presentation, a charity project and a small task for all interns to do. I found this to be a great thing to do in your spare time.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • There was one task I completed where I did all the work for one client. I found this to be super rewarding and learnt a lot during my time completing the task. It was a great place to be independent however at times it felt like I was constantly being assessed.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I learnt a lot about how excel works. This I won't neccesarily be able to use in my further studies but is a useful skill for later on in life. I also recieved help with presentations and other soft skills such as networking and communication. I also did some simple statistics which will be useful for my degree.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Everyone in the office was quite taklative and it was very easy to join in on everyone's conversations. However we were a small department within a fairly large floor and so it was harder to get involved with the other people on my floor in my humble opinion of the firm.

    3/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • It was a very structured programme. Our first 3 days were general training days. With the next two days of the first week being dedicated to more specific training. We were then given charity projects which had specific deadlines too and a presentation at the end of our internship. We also had presentations for our team.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • The intial 3 training days where they paid for travel and accommodation were really helpful. If I get a graduate job they will also pay for all my study materials as well as my exams and pay for me to attend tutorials and so I believe that a lot more is invested in graduates.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • 5/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Since my department is fairly small I feel like there is a lot more scope to move up within the department with experience and over the years. A lot of senior people at the firm have climbed their way up having started at Aon in fairly junior roles. So their is great scope for growth.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • We were able to get to know all the interns across the firm due to the initial training day with al the interns. We also met up with all the others on various other occassions and so this was a great way to network with others my age and get to know what they were workiing on.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • I lived in tottenham and took the train into central london everyday. It cost me 170 pounds per week for my accommodation and a further 35 pound for travel on the train. I found that I had a fair bit of money left over after getting paid and so this was reasonable for london.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • I found that during the internship the other graduates went out about every other week. Although I don't think this is a regular occurence since the GI team at Aon have exams to do every 6 months and so during exam season I imagine people will go out a lot less.

    5/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • We had the charity project which involved working with other interns on a charity project. However there didn't seem to be any other activities that I could get involved with the other graduates. Me and a fellow intern also got involved in a cultural quiz which everyone from the firm was invited to. This was a great way to network.
