    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I've loved my time at JP Morgan, it's been an incredible experience. I had the pleasure of meeting some great people and working on some really impactful projects. Due to the scale of the company I was able to work with people across the globe which was a totally new experience.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Everyone was incredibly welcoming and supportive of all of the interns. They were willing to give up time to talk us through our work and offer loads of useful career advice based on their experience. We were invited along to team events and had lots of opportunities to present our work to senior leadership to get high profile recognition.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My manager was incredibly supportive throughout my internship and really helped me to build my network and to raise awareness of the work I was doing. I sat next to him so was able to ask questions at any time and he always made time to coach me in order to make the most of my internship.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • It varied throughout the internship. In the beginning, it was quite slow while I got used to all of the systems and worked through my mandatory training. However, after that, it really picked up and there has been so much to do, although it's always been manageable. I'd much rather be busy than have nothing to do so it was perfect for me and varies depending on your team.

    5/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given a lot of responsibility during the internship to run our group project and carve out its direction without too much manager interference. I was also given the flexibility to run my own project on the side alongside my other work which goes to show how much trust they put in you to still be able to deliver on your commitments.

    5/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • During my internship, we took part in a variety of events. These included Cyber CTF exercises and secure coding competitions which have improved my technical skills. However, the biggest lessons I've learned are in working with people. Learning to adapt to working across time zones, influencing stakeholders to make things happen and presenting research and findings in a succinct manner to leadership are so key to success in a corporate environment.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The office atmosphere was really welcoming and although it was serious at times we always had a good laugh. We also had a pool table at the end of the office so would quite often have a game to celebrate achievements along the way. We also had hot desks meaning you got to meet a range of different people and we often had visitors from other offices around the world.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The internship was pretty seamless when it came to organisation. We knew well ahead of time what we needed to do and I was lucky that my manager was very approachable so any issues I had along the way I was just able to ask. At times it did feel like we had a lot of meetings but I really enjoyed that as I like to be organised.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • They invest heavily in developing their interns. Everyone gets access to Pluralsight with a bunch of interesting tutorials including role-specific content. We also competed in a secure coding online contest and capture the flag event which taught us a bunch of useful cybersecurity skills. They even sorted me out with my own hosting for a side project I ran, which shows their commitment to encouraging innovation on growth in their interns.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Financial Bonus

    Company Parties/Events

    Healthcare/Dental

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Incredibly appealing, I really enjoyed my time at JP Morgan and would love to return. They tell you early on that the internship is ultimately a long trial period for them to see how you fit in within the organisation to decide whether to invite you back the start a graduate scheme the following year.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Absolutely, I met a great group of people who went out regularly and we also all got involved in various events on the campus. I also went out with my team and my manager on a variety of occasions so there was plenty to get involved with. They also organised three socials during the internship with food and a free bar so we were well covered!

    4/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • I actually commuted down and a lived at home during my at JP Morgan so this wasn't as much of an issue for me but parking in the area is really expensive unless you manage to get an employee summer pass but that only works for one month so you will have to pay the rest of the time.

    4/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Good, there are lots of great clubs in Bournemouth although I didn't actually go out much as I had to drive back home.

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Yes, we went on a corporate responsibility day to a nature reserve to help pull down barbed wire fences and there are lots of clubs and societies that run charity events.
