    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • There were many events planed for us and my team is super nice. Work isn't too stressful.

    5/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I feel very much valued by my teammates as they were all super nice. But maybe since everyone in the firm are busy, when I email someone, there is a high chance that they are going to ignore my email because I am an intern.

    3/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My manager has been extremely helpful. We have weekly catch-up where not only we discuss about my work in GS but also he provides me with career advice. He has been very understanding of everything problem I encountered as well.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • At one point of my internship, I'd have to keep waiting for approval or someone to respond to my email. It was boring but then I talked to my manager and he gave me new tasks in helping the team solving production issue. It was great as I now understand what everyone on my team do and how it's like to actually be a part of the team other than just working on my own project.

    5/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • My main project would be used in our team's future plan. And the issue I was given to solve in production put some more responsibility on my shoulder.

    4/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • The thing is Java is my main language and I worked in Java. This means I didn't actually learn a lot of new things language wise. And for example, I built a Spark refiner for my team, but I didn't know a lot more about Spark because I was using a wrapped up version written by someone here in GS.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Engineering office is pretty chill unlike the trading floor which seems pretty stressful. Our floor is not too busy or noisy and people go play table tennis when they feel like it. Some teams have team lunch every week and team outing (like going to pub or pooling, etc.) sometime.

    3/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • I believe HCM put a lot of effort into organizing our internship. They are speeches, panel talks and different sorts of welcome and farewell events. The only thing is that many of the engineering interns work in a different building other than the main one which means we have to constantly take small walks and it interrupts our workflow. But I don't think that would be a problem once everyone moves to the new building.

    5/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • There are a lot of training organized in the first week. I think it's our managers that sign us up to those that seems fit. And all the talks were somewhat helpful on our way to determine our careers and how's life like in GS as a senior. We were also taken onto a trip to Benchley Park and a data center.

    5/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Flexi Time

    Company Parties/Events

    Healthcare/Dental

    3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I have seen my team interviewing new analyst so it seems like technology keeps growing inside GS and there are plenty of future employment opportunities in the company as long as you are a good fit for the job. And the mobility program within GS sounds pretty promising as well.

    5/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • I know almost every other summer interns in my building and some apprentices as well. To me, everyone is super nice. We have lunch together. We go play table tennis once in a while. We organised our own weekend events and go out together. Only very few interns are very competitive.

    5/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • The company is within City of London so of cause the cost of living and socializing is higher than the rest of the city and country. But no one that I know here actually lives within the area and many people bring their own lunch so the cost is too much considering that.

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • There are many many many pubs in the area. I personally don't like standing on the street having my bag on the ground while holding my drink in my hand for like two hours. But I think if you are British, you would enjoy the environment and you can always go downstairs to grab a drink with your colleges.

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Yes. NIC (NAPA and Intern Committee) organised a picnic in Victoria Park during one of the weekends. Goldman Sachs also have CTW (Community Teamwork) which all the interns took place to help preserve the environment near Thames. There are many different welcome events organized by various Affinity Network as well.
