The Role
The internship has been a fantastic experience with varying work projects, good exposure to all members of the team, including seniors, and different work types. There has also been a great social life amongst the interns which has been great.
The team was great at including me as a proper part of the team and not just as a resource they could use for simple tasks. My colleagues were good at communicating the importance of the work I did and that I was contributing well to the project.
There was great support and guidance both by managers and junior team members. Both when I requested it but also when they could see a need for it.
It was ebbs and flows really, but on average I would say I was very busy. Some weeks were slower than others, and some weeks were super intense with 110+ hours. In general I worked a lot (because I had a lot of work, not because there was a facetime culture) but it's important to note that this was a result of the team being busy but also me constantly pushing for more work.
Once I had proved my abilities in the first weeks I was given increasing responsibility and in the end worked directly with associates/ VPs on some projects, effectively functioning as the analyst of the team.
The skills will help me in some courses in my studies, but mostly it is soft skills such as time-management, maintaining focus during long stretches of work, prioritizing and attention to detail that will help me in by degree studies and beyond.
The Company
The atmosphere was great. People in the team generally emphasized having fun during the day, so there was plenty of room for jokes and fun despite working hard.
It seemed very well-organized. We had a well-organized intro and training week and there were scheduled review sessions, speaker series, senior brunch event etc. throughout the internship.
There was a one-week training period before we hit the desk, but the real training and development was definitely during the subsequent 9 weeks of the internship.
Subsidised/Company Gym
Company Parties/Events
In general, very appealing I would say. The bank is in a good spot now and continues to strengthen its competitive position, so there is generally a positive view on future prospects within the firm; it is too early to say how many interns are converted.
The Culture
As mentioned earlier, there was a great social scene amongst the interns and we really took advantage of our time off.
I did not live in the Canary Wharf area so I have no insight into the COL there.
There are some good pubs and bars near the office which makes for good after-work drinks; for longer nights out we typically went into the city.
Yes plenty of opportunities - many 'organizations' to be a part of and also volunteering opportunities.
