    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • Overall, I saw my internship as a positive experience. I found it challenging to begin with however all staff were so kind and helpful that I gradually became more confident in myself and the work I was completing. I still fell like I have a long way to go, but at least I have made a start!

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • If I'm honest, at the beginning I was very nervous. Working in an environment where I was the youngest, I thought there would be a lot of people looking down on me. In fact, it was the complete opposite. The more I came out my shell, the more they opened up to me and I honestly cannot thank them enough. They were like my home away from home!

    5/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Support was always available if I needed it - and that was a lot of the time! Being an intern, I had questions pretty much every minute but I was never uncomfortable asking my colleagues for help or advice. They know we are learning, and are happy to help us.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Depends on the day. Some days I had a lot to keep me occupied, some other days I was less involved. My branch had gone through a couple of changes and some staff were on leave, so I understood that they did not have as much time to teach me or show me as much as they would have liked.

    3/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • They gave me as much responsibility as I felt like I could handle. I think my confidence or maybe lack of confidence shone through at points, so I think they took that into consideration when delegating me some tasks. I appreciated that my work was always checked, to ensure I had carried it out correctly.

    3/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I think that the skills I have learnt will help me through my career in banking if I decide to pursue it later on in life. My degree is not related to the financial industry directly, so I cannot say that it will help me in that area, yet I feel like I have a better idea of what goes on in the banking industry.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Completely not what I was expecting. I always imagined working 9-5 in an office to be draining and dull, yet having people to converse with all day made it so much better, and the days flew by. The atmosphere was something that made my experience at Handelsbanken great.

    4/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • 3/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • 3/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Company Parties/Events

    3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Appealing if this is the career path I choose to follow in the future. The culture of the organisation is something which I admire, and I cannot imagine working for another bank if their culture is not similar with Handelsbanken. I think it suits my character, and would encourage others to apply if they consider banking as a potential career.

    4/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • We had organised social events, but I think it very much depended on where you lived and worked in terms of how involved you were. Also, I think it depended on how much effort you put in with the other interns, as some people seemed to have enjoyed the placement more than others.

    4/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • I didn't live in the area so had to buy a weekly travelcard which cost me almost £30 a week - quite expensive for a student! Socialising in the area of my branch was cheaper than central London, yet I don't think it was very far from prices in general.

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • 3/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • 3/5
