    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I enjoyed working at Aon Inpoint, I have learnt a lot and developed a good network. The work is enjoyable, however it can be overwhelming at first if you do not have the right support on a project (this tends not to happen, out of all other intern experiences in my team, there was only one incidence of this). I was rotated around projects every 2 weeks which allowed me to gain exeprience in different types of work.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Mostly yes, my colleagues have been super helpful during projects. They take time to sit with you and guide you through the work so you do have some independence but you know that you are heading in the right direction. However, there will be some colleagues who will not take time to get to know you but that will occur in any workplace.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Yes, on most of the projects I was on I was given excellent support. I was still allowed independence in my work, however, as I needed to be taught a lot of things from scratch, I really felt supported not just by managers but also directors on the project. Unfortunately, there was a project which happened over two weeks where the person I was working with only sat down twice with me so that was a project I really struggled with. All other projects were not like this, I believe this was an anomaly.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • It varied greatly. Some days I was really struggling to fill the day but generally there is a lot to juggle in a day. Deadlines also mean that you might have to work later. One day I had to stay until 8.45pm (this was with the project where I was not supported very well so that might have been possible to avoid with better maagement). However, I know it is normal for permanent employees to have to work long hours if they have to.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • To an extent, yes. All of my work was checked so if there were any errors they could be rectified. Sometimes, the work was formatting a slide which is a responsibility because that is the final product the client sees. Sometimes, I would be sorting and analysing data which is the basis for the slides so also holds responsibility.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • There is a lot of Excel work, you are taught a lot but you also have to remember a lot. We were also given the opportunity to do a project with other interns over the course of the 9 weeks. This taught me a lot on teamwork, time management and presentation skills.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • People are generally very busy but they will chat for a little bit. Generally a very friendly atmosphere, however, there are some that might not acknowldge you.

    3/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Very organised, it was clear how we would be assessed (by the manager) and what the internship would look like. The Graduate team would always be available if I needed any help or had any questions. It also greatly depend on your manager, mine was excellent and we had regular catch ups and set goals early on. However, other interns in my team did not have this same experience.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Mostly it was online training for HR. We were given some training on Powerpoint and Excel but I think it came too late in the internship. It would have been much better earlier on. It also would've been helpful to be given an understanding on qualifications we would get on the grad scheme.

    3/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • 1/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Quite appealing.

    3/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Social events did not really occur, there was only one. So I would say it might not be the best for the social scene however colleagues are friendly. If you asked someone for a coffee, they would be more than happy to go.

    3/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • In central London so expensive. But you get free coffee in the building everyday.

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Central London so good but expensive.

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Not really.
