    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I really enjoyed my time here at Goldman Sachs. The work I did was insightful and required a mixture of both industry and academic knowledge which I personally found to be very refreshing. The people I worked with were lovely, and provided a fantastic support networks as I progressed through the internship.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I felt valued by my team. They were always available for me to ask questions, and never looked down on me for not knowing certain pieces of information, no matter how trivial. I was shown first hand how my project would impact future projects (via certain techniques or methodology) and the company itself.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I was given and was able to add to a great support network. The firm organised group mentor meetings which let you hear a Managing Director's insight into the firm and their time here, as well as hearing from the other interns about their projects. I also had a lot of support from my manager and team, along with others from various teams that I had met along the way

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Quite. I was given a fair amount of responsibility from day one, but still had oversight from my team. I spent a considerable amount of my time learning new things and reading material around the topic. There were quite a few insightful events run by the HCM division, and I spent a lot of time working on the project. However, I still had time to do my own things, chat with other colleagues, play table tennis and have a proper lunch break.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • A fair amount. I had a lot control over my project and the end result, but I still reported to my manager and team, who all provided guidance based on discussions they'd had prior to starting. Independence was important, as networking is key but a lot of that is done via your own initiative.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • The skills I learnt are directly applicable to the choices I made for my final year of university. I also had access to online training material provided by the firm that was comprehensive, so I learnt a lot of things that weren't directly related to my project, but may still be useful

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The environment was lively, but the office space wasn't that open so it could feel a little dark / claustrophobic. This is changing now that the brand new office is being rolled out - bright, open space, lively, stocked with good food and drinks. I didn't get the chance to work in the new office, but those who did said there was a drastic difference

    4/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The company clearly had a lot of experience dealing with interns. The projects were well structured and a lot of events were put on to make time at the firm as interesting and as insightful as possible. The mentoring programs were incredibly helpful and it didn't feel like we were just given busy work

    5/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • There were a lot of personal training events held throughout the internship, and a number of them are programs regularly offered to firm employees to better their careers. There is a very comprehensive training platform that's open access, which I learnt a lot from. I had access to a very good mentor and buddy who helped massively throughout the internship

    5/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Subsidised/Company Gym

    Financial Bonus

    Healthcare/Dental

    3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Very. The work is interesting, the environment is invigorating, the training materials are plentiful, and there's a lot of mobility. The career opportunities are fantastic - this is an incredible place to start your career and you take on a lot of responsibility and learn whether it's right for you.

    5/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • There are a lot of interns, so you'll make friends with the crowd you want to hang out with easily. Everyone wants to have things to do in the evenings so there's a lot of chill events happening organised within the groups. The social scene is definitely what you make of it though

    4/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • It's the city - there are a lot of lunch places that are reasonably priced (£5-7) if you were to go occasionally. There are a fair few parks to sit down and relax, and there are a lot of reasonably priced bars and ents around. The river is also very accessible from the office

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • I didn't check out the nightlife around where I work, but visited a few places in London which were quite good. There's plenty of information online for nightlife in London.

    2/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Yep! There are society-like "clubs" that represent different groups, each of which hold events that you can attend. An example of one was dragon boat racing and a barbecue, which was a lot of fun! There's also the community teamworks day, in which teams go out and volunteer somewhere to help out in the local community.
